Real work starts with the trail. The trail doesn’t lie. We follow it. We investigate the transaction history, trace where funds moved, and identify relevant on-chain activity. Every case is thoroughly reviewed, with the investigation focused on following the movement of funds and uncovering actionable leads. DM if you need a case reviewed.

How a crypto tracing investigation can develop: 🧵 1/ The first question isn’t always “Where is my money now?” A better starting point is: What exactly happened to the funds after the original transaction? That requires establishing the initial movement and building from there. 2/ Start with the available transaction data. The TXID, sending address, receiving address, amount, timestamp, and network can establish the foundation of the investigation. 3/ Then follow subsequent movements. Funds may remain in one wallet, move through several addresses, be divided across transactions, or eventually reach a service that creates another investigative lead. Just evidence first.

The movement itself matters. 4/ Context matters too. A wallet receiving funds doesn’t automatically prove who controls it. Likewise, an address interacting with an exchange doesn’t automatically identify the person behind the transaction. Good analysis separates what the data shows from what it doesn’t. 5/ That’s why screenshots, communications, payment records, website information, and other evidence can be important alongside blockchain data. They can help connect the on-chain timeline with what happened off-chain. 6/ The objective isn’t to make assumptions about a case. It’s to establish the facts that can be established, identify meaningful leads, document the trail, and determine what options may exist from there. No shortcuts. No guaranteed outcomes.

A hardware wallet can protect your keys, but it can’t protect every piece of personal information you share with a company. If customer details have been exposed, scammers may use real names, order information, or home addresses to make fake support messages look convincing. Be cautious with unexpected DMs, emails, and recovery offers. Never share your seed phrase, and don’t trust a message just because it contains accurate details about you. Sometimes, the information that makes a scam believable is the information you never expected to be exposed.
🚨 JUST IN: Hardware wallet maker Keystone says hackers got into its website and walked off with customer names, contact details, home addresses and order info. Seed phrases and keys weren't touched, but expect a wave of fake "Keystone support" scams.

One of the biggest mistakes after a crypto scam is deleting the evidence because it feels irrelevant. Keep the transaction IDs. Save wallet addresses. Screenshot conversations, payment confirmations, websites, emails, usernames, and anything else connected to the incident. The blockchain may preserve the transaction history, but the surrounding evidence can help explain what happened before and after the transfer. You don’t need to know what’s important yet. Preserve everything first. Analyze it afterward.

A TXID is usually where an investigation starts, not where it ends. Seeing funds arrive at a wallet tells you something important, but there’s often much more to examine afterward. Where did the funds move next? Were they split between different addresses? Did they eventually interact with a known service? Was there a pattern across multiple transactions? One transaction can provide a starting point. Following the broader trail is what can make the picture clearer.

Crypto scams often leave behind more information than people realize. A transaction doesn’t simply disappear once it’s confirmed. Wallet movements, timestamps, contract interactions, exchange deposits, and the sequence of transfers can all help establish what happened. The difficult part is knowing what to look for and separating useful evidence from assumptions. That’s the approach behind SPECTRA: follow the evidence, understand the movement of funds, and build the clearest picture possible from the information available.

Were you affected by a crypto scam, exploit, or unauthorized wallet transfer? We’re currently putting SPECTRA, our blockchain tracing and analysis engine, through its final testing phase using real-world cases. We’re now opening the process to selected live investigations. How it works: Your case is analyzed through SPECTRA to map the movement of funds following the incident. The findings are then reviewed manually to identify relevant transactions, connected addresses, and potential points of interest. What you receive: • A structured breakdown of the transaction trail • Relevant wallet addresses and transfers identified during the analysis • Manual review of the findings • A detailed case report that can help organize evidence for further investigation or legal action Every case is reviewed in submission order, and we’ll provide updates as the analysis progresses. If you have a case you’d like investigated, DM us with the transaction hash, wallet address, and a brief description of what happened. Repost this so others dealing with a crypto incident can find the investigation channel.

SPECTRA is Obsidian Forensics’ core engine, built for investigators and everyday users alike. It allows users to simulate or decode blockchain transactions and examine the full execution details before interacting with them. The browser extension runs on the same engine, helping users inspect and understand blockchain interactions directly in their everyday workflow.
