Beijing comprises 16 districts - some urban, some rural - & each district is itself further subdivided into subdistricts.
& for some daft reason, I've decided I want to visit each of these subdistricts.
It won't happen. It's stupid. But there's (probably) no harm in trying🧵

Chinese people aren't always polite...
You can walk into a 7-Eleven or Lawson, get a sad sounding, scripted "huan ying guan ling" or maybe just silence, no "ni hao" at the counter, buy your Nongfu Spring water and baozi, and walk out the door.
But if you ever need help, you'll have an army of cleaners or bystanders team up to find the place you're looking for, spending 20 minutes to get you there.
Which actually happened to me a few years ago...I had a cleaner helping my find a store in a business park, we couldn't find it so she recruited a few other cleaners to help 😂.
My girlfriend on the other hand, she'll go into a fruit and vegetable shop and have a conversation with the shop assistant for minutes, both laughing with me standing there wondering what's going on.
No one needs fake politeness that makes you cringe with every word you exchange. I never want to hear;
"How's your day going?"
"Nice weather today, isn't it?"
"Any plans for the day?"
Ever again.

The future of China metro?
China-developed VELLINK, the country’s first digital metro train equipped with embodied intelligence, was unveiled at the 2026 International Trade Fair for Transport Technology, which kicked off in Berlin, Germany on Tuesday.
By integrating embodied AI, a comprehensive sensing network, proprietary AI algorithms and high-speed communications, the train can perceive, make decisions and interact intelligently, shifting from passively following commands to proactively optimizing operations.
Lightweight materials and energy-efficient systems reduce the train’s weight by about 18%, while overall energy savings exceed 10% and full-life-cycle carbon emissions are reduced by about 15%.
A fascinating bit of old footage for many reasons, but it's particularly interesting hearing a form of the scouse accent I almost entirely associate with an order generation, being spoken by kids!
Obviously, they're the same people just 50 years prior, but it's a little jarring!
uh huh

Wrote this for The Guardian on a crazy Chinese title race and, potentially, the biggest choke ever in Asia.
Also crazy are the posts in Chinese football forums saying that I didn't write the article at all but it was submitted it to The Guardian by local journalists.
Not sure if it is meant as a compliment or not, but will take it as one!

🧱A new discovery is adding a missing chapter to the history of the Great Wall in Beijing!
🔎Archaeologists have uncovered the first Sui Dynasty (581–618) Great Wall remains in Beijing, at the Dalinggou site in Changping district. A Sui Dynasty wuzhu coin and a porcelain fragment helped confirm the dating. The nearly 5.5-meter-wide stone wall suggests early frontier defenses were more substantial than previously thought, requiring considerable labor and resources.
