The robotics security ecosystem remains nascent. @CarnegieMellon University @CyLab's Robotics Security & Privacy Initiative (RSPI) is a timely effort to make security and privacy first-order concerns as consumer robotics moves from prototypes to products.
This echoes lessons from automotive security. In 2016, my graduate research examined how connected vehicles relied on flat in-vehicle networks where infotainment and cyber-physical systems shared pathways, and how the industry shifted to segmented, secure architectures.
Humanoid robotics appear at a similar inflection point. RSPI’s work on AI safety and guardrails helps define the methods and controls required for trustworthy AI-driven robots. Organizations that implement these foundations early will set the standard for the field.
As more aspects of life move online, how do we protect personal information? On this episode of Does Compute, Sarah Scheffler (@CyLab) discusses how applied cryptography works to protect privacy, and what privacy means in the digital age.
