As DoW CIO Hon. Davies stressed, using strong, unique passwords remains as one of the simplest, yet most effective frontline practices that help protect your accounts and the @DeptofWar.
Reusing passwords opens a security risk that can put all of your accounts at risk, and malicious actors know this. Stay alert for unexpected password-reset messages, account alerts, or login prompts. These messages may be attempts to get you to share credentials or click a malicious link.
Adopting just a few of these habits can make you Brilliant at the Basics.
Be Vigilant. In today’s Brilliant at the Basics reel @DeptofWar Chief Information Officer Hon. @DoWCIODavies shares how protecting PINs, using strong passwords, enabling multifactor authentication, and safeguarding your Common Access Card is fundamental in securing your personal information and the DoW.
Defend the Digital Frontline and Think Before You Click.
Social engineering remains one of the most persistent threats to the @DeptofWar and DIB. Cyber adversaries are smart and always looking to bypass security controls and gain access to networks.
Protecting these systems requires all of us to practice verification standards at every level. You should validate all unexpected communications before you open any link.
Read our latest guidance in the Brilliant of the Basics’ webpage to learn more on how you can bolster your defense-in-depth posture.

The DoW is immediately suspending CMMC Phase II requirements to clear bureaucratic roadblocks for the DIB.
We must scale warfighter readiness, not paperwork.
What you need to know:
· Phase II & costly administrative burdens are paused.
· Phase I self-assessments remain firmly in place.
· NIST SP 800-171 Rev 2 and DFARS 252.204-7012 compliance are still required.
· Focus is shifting to tangible cybersecurity and operational resilience, not red tape.
To uplift cybersecurity while eliminating unnecessary bureaucracy, we’ve launched a 60-day review on the future of the program to be led by a CMMC Reform Task Force. We are also seeking industry perspectives from the DIB via our new RFI on driving scalable, realistic security measures and operational resilience without compliance burden.

Leseyl Bernys, Executive Director of @DC3Forensics, made one point clear: cybercrime is a national security threat, not just an IT issue. As cyber threats evolve, so must the defense.
He highlighted the increasingly sophisticated and persistent adversaries targeting our nation's defense and stressed that speed, precision and coordination are essential to staying ahead. DC3 delivers advanced digital forensics, cyber analytics and law enforcement support to detect, disrupt and deter malicious activity before it impacts the mission.

Jeffrey Hunt, global operations branch chief at the @DC3Forensics, discussed challenges in navigating cybercrime and intelligence.
He outlined how cybercriminals increasingly leverage virtual currencies, enabling fast, cross-border movement of illicit funds that is resistant to traditional financial controls, with reduced reliance on traditional banking and automated obfuscation and laundering. He also noted the expansion beyond small-scale crime to large-scale money laundering and sanctions evasion at the organization and nation-state level.
The session highlighted identifying key entities such as service providers and exchanges, referring leads to partner agencies and supporting target identification, evidence locations and legal process.
