Nothing brings me more joy than seeing my children succeed and thrive. Watching young men mature into responsible and capable adults is truly a blessing and we need to talk about it much more. I love it.
This a very American impulse. Reinhold Niebuhr deftly analyzes the phenomenon in the Social Gospelers and mainline social reform movements that tended towards a highly moralistic account of politics that ignored human nature and history. Still relevant.
Thesis: evangelicals are interested in morality, not politics. Power is a dirty word. Compromise is bad. That is the lifeblood of politics but they generally find it all distasteful and immoral.

BREAKING: Virginia Democratic state Sen. Louise Lucas, 82, has been indicted on federal drug trafficking, money laundering, fraud and firearms charges. Prosecutors accuse her of helping run a marijuana distribution operation with family members and using her position to protect it and profit from it. Lucas was a leading advocate for legalizing marijuana in Virginia.
Here’s the thing: if you do biblical studies you will, no doubt, use scholarship by non-Christians, atheists, and theological liberals who are heretics. Some of the best scholarship comes from the unredeemed. That’s a fact. But nobody is making a stink about it. No one.
Redemption does not ensure intellectual brilliance. Many of holiest people I know are the least intellectual. That’s the beauty of the gospel. But God distributes intellectual capability how He wills.
Very eloquent defense of Just War convictions. @mlivecche
Palmer Luckey says America needs people willing to build weapons and fight to defend freedom: “Pacifists exist on the sacrifices of people who actually put their lives on the line.” 🇺🇸
“Societies have always needed a warrior class that is enthused and excited about enacting violence in pursuit of good aims. Philosophers can criticize those people and say they’re sick in the head, but society needs them.
We need people who are willing to fight for our country. My life’s not on the line directly, but you need people like me who don’t lose any sleep making tools of violence in order to preserve freedom.
I have no problem with people who say, ‘I could never do that. I’d feel too guilty.’ It’s a good thing we’ve got a mix in society. We don’t all need to do the same things or think the same way.
Pacifists exist on the sacrifices of people who actually put their lives on the line. And I think we should respect that, even if we’re not willing to do it ourselves.”
Palmer is exactly right. I believe we need to stop criticizing people who have dedicated their life to protecting our soldiers and our country. Since the beginning of time, we’ve always needed a warrior class and I’m happy we have people willing to sleep at night knowing that what they’re doing is protecting all enemies domestic and foreign.
The thing I loved about Tim Keller was his willingness to engage and learn from just about everybody. It was a great quality and one I hope to emulate.
Important lesson here: CT moved to a contributions model of revenue and doubled over a decade even though the service revenue declined.

I did a seminar in my PhD program at a secular university entitled "Christian Politics," in which we read massive amounts of Christian literature on politics from the 2nd-16th century. No one in the seminar was a Christian. It was taught by a secular Jew and German.
If you are interested in the truth, you must willing to learn it from any source, even one that you find offensive. Augustine said Christians should not limit themselves to learning from only
Christians. Nietzsche, Schmitt, Foucault, Marx should all be read and discussed
I studied philosophy at a state university among mostly atheist professors and learned a lot. I did a PhD with most liberal and agnostic professors at UChicago and learned a lot. We read and discussed everything. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

I was delighted to get to write this piece. Usually I have to keep my demography takes "demography, with a veiled hint of faith." Was nice to be able to lay out what I think the stakes really are for churches.
Happy to have @lymanstoneky debut @AmReformer discussing an important study he and his colleagues @FamStudies recently published on cultural factors influencing fertility and ways Christians can think about creating a culture that supports and encourages having children.
