Ever wondered why Flanders and Wallonia vote so differently? 🇧🇪🗳️
In my second PhD chapter – out now in @EPSRjournal – we look at cleavage structures in both regions
Very (!) happy to see this published: cambridge.org/core/journals/…

While the far-right surges in Flanders, a nativist party has so far remained absent in Wallonia 🇧🇪
I argue why this is the case, in @LSEEuroppblog

Bernard Manin, a great thinker who helped us understand liberalism, representation and representative democracy, passed away on Thursday. His best-known work is 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘎𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵. His last book was on Montesquieu.

First, Francophones are more left-wing, and less divided on welfare related matters.
Second, working-class voters have remained close to the social-democratic PS, but moved to the radical right VB in Flanders. We contribute this to higher class consciousness in Wallonia.

This took me a whole PhD year and 11 re-writes (🫠), so I’m excited to see the paper published.
Big thanks to supervisors @SwyngedouwM, @CecilMeeusen and Koen Abts, and to @AlbStefanelli, Cristiano Vezzoni and my @FSW_KULEUVEN-colleagues for all the feedback!
