Stay humble, be a good person, grind, and focus on your next step not the last - I look at the places I’ve been told no vs. the places I’ve been told yes, and I couldn’t be more happy with the way things have turned out.

Wizards owner @TedLeonsis joined me live on @wusa9 - we chatted about dealing with Anthony Davis and expectations for this new-look Wizards team. Leonsis believes AD will be playing with a chip on his shoulder and that the expectation is for the Wizards to be a play-in/playoff team.

#Commanders WR Jaylin Lane had surgery to repair his fractured and dislocated ankle on Oct. 9, per source. The procedure was successful and he's expected to be cleared for football activities just before OTAs.

This has been planned all season, enacted now.
The #Commanders have hired Steve Wilks to work with the defensive coaches under Dan Quinn and Daronte Jones, per me and @RapSheet. The decision to hire Wilks was made last month. He started last week.
Wilks will help with game planning. He won't be with the team on game days.

Some exciting news: I’m back covering the Wizards beat with The District Standard!
Once the site launches tomorrow, the new outlet will be your home for all things D.C. sports.
I’ll be at tonight’s season opener, and games and practices all season long. Can’t wait! 😤
Honestly. I have a hard time thinking any offensive coordinator, but especially one who has played QB in the NFL, drew this up for second down, and it’s not a Hail Mary.
Look at all that unused space on a play that Daniels clearly wasn’t thinking run as a primary option.
Think it’s far more likely 1-3 of these guys are in the wrong place.
Just the way they’re all running, seems almost like each guy thought they were the clearout.
Stefon Diggs on why he didn’t celebrate his touchdown against the 49ers:
“I was never gonna celebrate. I mean, we down, you know, what you celebrating?”
“We down, we fighting our way back right now. Just focus on the next play.”

.@Commanders @49ers @sonnystyles_ The captain & Commander of this defense gave them a chance to WIN...again...#BaldysBreakdowns
Yeah. It’s all lining up. And Jayden did address his throwing the ball away in his answer when asked about if he thought it was third down.
“No, I just gotta execute better in that situation, regardless of a flag or not. You know, fourth down, we gotta—don’t die with the ball and stuff like that. So just be better. I have to be better, you know, in that spot.”
Daniels also said he did see the flag get thrown. “I did. I did know. I didn’t know what. It could have been offsides. It could have been on us. You know, I’m not really into that type of stuff, you know?”
I will take the stance that Dan Quinn did in fact know it was 4th down entering the play. He would have 100% communicated with the OC well prior to the 4th down play on what distance they would go for it vs kick a field goal.
And the 4th down decision on 4th and 2 there is strongly supported by data. They win the game ~10% more often when choosing to go for it vs kick a FG.
(Win 11% of the time going for it, win 10% of the time kicking a field goal)
Would imagine there was temporary confusion at the conclusion of the play after seeing the flag and the throwaway. You want to be prepared on the headset if they rule it a presnap penalty, and if they did you’d kick a field goal on 4th and 7 instead.
Throwaway on 4th down by the QB is really the biggest issue here.
The clock was running.
If I’m right, and I’m on an airplane so my research is mostly - ‘I believe’ oriented - the rule rule @reshmanuel is talking about applies after the two-minute warning, with a running clock.
In that scenario, an illegal shift becomes a false start. And is not a declinable penalty.
Outside that, an illegal shift is a live-ball foul - which is why they let the play run, even though the movement happens before the snap.
That’s why the play continued and San Francisco could decline the penalty.
But the fact that it’s not always the case makes it simply human to think for a fleeting moment that maybe you’re getting fourth down back. Especially if that person in DQ’s ear here is not an NFL head coach, but say, someone whose job it is to crunch the analytics on go for it or kick.
Replying to @DHarrison82
Here's where admittedly I get confused. Illegal shift when the clock is running I thought is a presnap penalty and has to be enforced as a false start.
Was the clock not runnnig?
Jayden Daniels after the Commanders’ 23-17 loss to the 49ers on Monday night:
“Competing only goes so far in this league. You gotta do whatever it takes to win the game, and we didn’t win.”
Washington heads into its bye week at 1-4-1.
