I spent years of my childhood in Greece and visited regularly until my 30s, although less frequently since moving to the US. I was born and raised in London.
My views differ from the Greeks on here, not necessarily Greeks in general. A lot of the Greek diaspora on X seem to be pro-junta conservatives, nationalists, or people who swallow whatever the media tells them. The average Greek Iโve encountered in Athens is far more open-minded.
And letโs not forget, Greeks have famously disagreed with each other throughout history. From the ancient city-states to modern Greek politics, disagreement and political division are practically Greek traditions. The fact that you seem to think Greeks should all share the same opinions shows a rather poor understanding of Greek culture and history.
My Greek is broken these days. I spoke it much better as a child, and whenever I return to Greece, it gradually comes back. Iโm culturally Greek Orthodox but agnostic in my beliefs.
As for Erdoฤan, I donโt think heโs a good leader, and I dislike Turkish nationalism. But letโs not pretend Greece doesnโt have its own nationalism and political problems. The main difference is that Greece is a freer society.
It always makes me laugh when people demand that I publicly condemn Erdoฤan as though Iโm some important politician whose statement the world is waiting for. His values are incompatible with mine. I donโt like him. I also donโt like Mitsotakis, particularly his governmentโs support for Israel despite its actions in Gaza, which I consider genocide.
Of course the Turkish governmentโs actions deserve criticism and condemnation. But so do the Greek governmentโs when warranted. I donโt believe criticism should depend on which flag someone happens to wave.
I donโt see being Greek as an obligation to defend Greece unconditionally or treat Turks as enemies. I can be proud of my heritage without subscribing to nationalism.

But youโre modelling a fabricated sample, not my actual DNA. My IllustrativeDNA results give me 4.2% Slavic, although I understand different models can give different results. Youโve gone from 17% to 10% now. What makes you so certain about my ancestry without even having my coordinates?

Many people form Smyrna are mainlanders because it was the Athens of the day. People would move to the โbig cityโ. I checked my results and youโre right I do have some but itโs 4.2%, still very low.

Youโre confusing theological disagreement with hatred of people. Yes, Chrysostom preached against Judaism, and John of Damascus condemned Islam. Neither proves Christians are inherently required to hate Jews or Muslims. Church Fathers arenโt infallible, and quoting two of them doesnโt establish universal Christian doctrine.

Why would I have any Slavic? Iโm from the Aegean islands. Slavic would only be in islands that were repopulated by mainlanders like Chios or Samos.

Yes as well as tinos, kastellorizo and kalymnos. So depending on the website and the update it shows different things.

So do you think we are a hive mind? All Greeks hold hands and sing together? We all think different. We have had several civil wars in the last 100 years not to mention the city states warring. The fact you think all Greeks need to have the same views is telling on your understanding of Greek culture.
There you go
