It's finally here, what you've all been waiting for. A video and not the final released product. DXU24 Development Update 2 youtu.be/7RCNGq8Q3s4?si=Wbrn…

Its a shame that Bioware has been closed, but if you were being honest with yourself, you realize they haven't put out the goods since Mass Effect 3. Worship the people behind games, not the brand. All the key people that made you fall in love with Bioware left last decade.

Same thing happened with xfiles after season 5, all the good writters left, but fox kept flailing away at the show.

During COVID lockdowns, Adobe was the only software license that prohibited remote use for schools, because fuck you. If you broke that term they punished your education institute with punitive fees, because fuck you. Now the world is saying fuck you to Adobe
I genuinely don’t get why some people want Adobe to lose so badly 😭💀

This was for a Product Design school, which licensed a massive array of software. New Zealand has very little bargaining power and individual licensing was cost prohibitive. The idea of capitalism was predicated around companies doing the right thing for the community, because they had to compete and stay relevant. Time and time again, companies like Adobe prove to the world why monopolies are dangerous.

Can someone jail break the Xbox series S so I can finally get fixes for it's shit ass HDR bugs, maybe even just get Google TV installing on it so I can bypass the stinky OS that's already on it. All I really want is a solid Google TV like box for movies and streaming that supports HDR on YouTube and Plex with a side of 120hz 4k HDR game streaming from my PC. I've reverted back to my 2017 nvidia shield but that's had long standing software issues that also annoy the piss out of me (imagine that it sometimes takes 30-60 seconds for it to recognize you casted a YouTube video to it).

9 tiles is hard and I could totally shift some out and others in. GTA San Andreas, Golden Eye, many others. But post what you got my9games.net/en

I wish Meta had done DisplayPort over USB from the beginning. Its just one of those things that would have made the Quest 3 perfect. What was holding them back? Cost? SoC support? There's nothing worse than firing up Skyrim VR, it's raining in game and all you see is JPEGs. Also, can we please finally nuke HDMI from orbit? It's the absolutely worst display connection standard known to man, ask anyone who's had to set up a public lecture space or had to run HDMI over long distances. Ask them about handshakes.

I wonder what a steam frame would be priced at if we threw away all the standalone capability. A steam frame that still did foveated wireless streaming. Maybe 4gb of RAM, 16 or 32gb of nand storage for firmware. What's the lowest SoC you'd need for streaming video? If valve released a $700 streaming only frame, would people buy it? You could probably actually get away with 1gb of RAM with a lean environment.

Latest Surreal 98 patch also comes with a lightmap conversion routine that takes the original lightmaps and juices them. Currently they resolve into HL2 style basis vector light maps but thinking of converting them to L1 SH lightmaps using the latest ZH3 method.

The new lightmaps and spherical harmonic probe lighting system jacks the performance as well, often performing 4-5x better than a purely dynamically lit scene.

Latest patch for Surreal 98 just released. Decided to run the Revision version of the street map and ... Holy Moly, I've never actually given Revision the time of day but it's really shinning here. Latest patch also has native DLSS 5 Neural Rendering integrated for those who want it.

We integrated an ONNX net to process textures coming from the original game to produce normal, height and roughness maps on the fly. Thank you PBRify! PBRify uses ethically sourced training data to create its nets.

We have some issues with the Liberty Island level with it at the moment but working to resolve those so the mod is fully playable.

I would say, from my experience in teaching and weeding out AI cheating, that the more passionate, involved and intelligent students engage with the content better and score better without AI usage. AI usage generally shows up in the bottom half of the class. However, to get students to engage with the learning content it needs to be designed to be engaging in the first place. As a student in the 2000s I nearly failed tertiary level databases because it was presented in such a boring and uninspired way. Working in the industry and using databases in an applied way I engaged with it instantly and had a lot of fun! The difference here is the context its used in. A lot of the onus for students failing here falls on the teachers for doing their job poorly, you can't FORCE students through the most boring experience of their life anymore because you couldn't be bothered making good content, or didn't have the talent to. That doesn't mean it has to be presented as a TikTok feed, it has to be presented to them in a way that challenges them to solve an interesting problem, not arbitrary and ambiguous problems. Making course content is a UX design challenge as much making apps / games, the user experience is so incredibly important. I wanted my students to experience the joys I had learning and fighting my way through comp-sci in the industry, and it lead to one of the most desirable and highly regarded (by students) courses we offered. Teaching needs to come from within and with empathy for the experiences your students are having. I taught Unreal and C++, where students got to create their own game engine from the ground up in the first half, to experience the pitfalls of C++ and then to get into a stricter C++ framework, Unreal. There's not much I enjoy more than watching a student grow, and it's something I miss about my time working in academia.
This can easily be "more intelligent students do not feel the need to lean on AI"

Game devs have wanted reflection and modules in C/C++ for decades. Nice simple code, no macro hacks, no constant include cleanups. What we got instead —> :(
C++26 reflection syntax looks abhorrent

Was reading through an old gaming magazine I used to read as a kid. Quake preview section shows up, lol, imagine hearing that your 386/486 would run quake as smoothly as it ran doom, then the utter disappointment on release. Also, no music?! Hyper Magazine Australia

Interesting watching rendering engineers lose their minds about how DLSS 5 is not accurate. I think there's a rude awakening here for game rendering engineers when they find out players don't give a shit about it looking accurate, they just want it to look "good". Games are visual pornography, not a visual technical manual. Not saying dlss 5 is looking good for every scenario yet, but neural rendering will likely surplant a lot of traditional renderers (in 10 years).
