Driving for Andrea Moda—widely considered the worst, most chaotic team to ever enter the sport—the Brazilian driver operated a genuine motorsport miracle on the streets of Monte Carlo.
Owned by an eccentric shoe designer, Andrea Moda was an unmitigated disaster. The car was built from outdated parts, lacked basic spares, and routinely finished pre-qualifying a staggering 15 seconds off the pace.
Knowing Monaco was a track where driver talent could compensate for a terrible car, Moreno spent the midnight before the sessions riding a scooter around the open street circuit, meticulously mapping out every single bump and track ripple.
Against all odds, Moreno survived pre-qualifying. On Saturday's official qualifying session, he wrestled the fragile car through the barriers, wringing every ounce of performance out of a chassis that belonged in a scrapyard. He clocked a 1:24.945 before the engine began leaking fluid, forcing him to wait in the garage. As the clock ran out, fully funded teams like Brabham failed to beat his time. Moreno had qualified 26th and made the grid.
What happened next is legendary. As Moreno walked down the pit lane, rival mechanics, engineers, and team bosses from powerhouses like McLaren and Williams stepped out of their garages to give him a standing ovation.
The car predictably suffered an engine failure just 11 laps into Sunday's race, which turned out to be the only laps Andrea Moda would ever run in a Grand Prix before being banned from the sport. Moreno didn't win a trophy, but he earned motorsport immortality as F1’s ultimate miracle worker.
