At what point does Pitt’s coaching staff realize that the defensive system needs to fit the players, not the other way around? Because right now, Pitt’s defense can’t stop a nosebleed. And what frustrates me most isn’t just that players are struggling. It’s that the coaching staff doesn’t seem willing to make adjustments to help them. Look at the rotating door at field safety lately. Any player who’s been put in that position lately has clearly struggling to execute their assignments in the secondary. But instead of adjusting the defense to make their jobs easier, Pitt seemingly just kept asking them to do the same things. Because the system is the system, right? If everybody executes it correctly, it works. Well, what happens when your players can’t execute it correctly? You have to change something. You cannot keep putting players in situations where they’re struggling and then act like the problem is entirely on them. At some point, that’s a coaching failure. Your job isn’t just to design a defensive system and expect everyone to execute it perfectly. Your job is to recognize what your players can and cannot do, adjust accordingly, and put them in positions to succeed. And if your only answer when things aren’t working is that the players need to execute better? Then you don’t have a backup plan. That’s a serious problem, and Pitt’s defensive coaching staff deserves criticism for it.
