A packed last 24 hours across Calgary. Attended the launch of the Alberta Business Alliance, a new voice bringing industries and entrepreneurs together to help keep Alberta the most competitive place in Canada to do business. Sat down with Mayor Jeromy Farkas @JeromyYYC to refocus the relationship between the province and Calgary. And for the record, Calgary got it right by pressing pause on blanket rezoning and listening to its residents first. Finished tonight with the CEOs at the Business Council of Alberta @BizCouncilAB, talking about what comes next. Alberta is leading the country in economic growth, job creation and housing starts, and the largest pipeline buildout in decades is underway. The job now is to keep that momentum going.

Albertans have fond memories of spending vacations & long-weekends in Alberta’s summer villages and it is increasingly where they call home! Pleased to speak and engage with members of the Association of Summer Villages of Alberta on how we can continue supporting and growing these cherished municipalities.

In light of a recent conversation regarding the sharing of confidential in-camera information at Calgary City Council, I have sent letters in reply to both Councillor Johnston and to Calgary Council, reaffirming my expectation as Minister that elected municipal officials must uphold their confidentiality obligations at all times while, at the same time councils must maintain open and transparent decision-making. Residents expect a constructive, working council to deliver core services to Calgarians and I am confident this council can deliver.

Thank you, Alberta! I’m very pleased to see the initial results from Elections Alberta show widespread support for remaining in Canada. Albertans have voted for a stronger Alberta in a united Canada. Thank you to all Albertans who took time to vote on these critically important referendum questions.   Tomorrow evening, October 20, I will address Albertans live at 6:45 p.m. to discuss the results of all referendum questions for which results are available, and where our province goes from here.

Alberta is mourning alongside the Canadian Armed Forces and the families, friends and colleagues of those affected by the tragic incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright yesterday. The loss of life and injuries are heartbreaking. On behalf of the Government of Alberta, I extend my deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and wish those who have been injured a full recovery. Our thoughts are also with the military personnel, families and colleagues facing uncertainty and grief during this incredibly difficult time. We are deeply grateful to the first responders, paramedics, physicians, nurses and hospital teams across Alberta who have mobilized to provide care to those injured. Albertans should all be incredibly proud of their frontline health care workers and our acute care system that has managed this mass casualty event. We’re also thankful to our neighbours in Saskatchewan who did not hesitate to support our response with additional air ambulance capacity, and to other provinces who have reached out offering their support and condolences. I will be traveling to Edmonton today to meet with provincial ministers and federal officials. The Government of Alberta continues to work closely with the federal government and local authorities. We have convened our Emergency Management Cabinet Coordination Committee and the Provincial Emergency Coordination Centre (PECC) has been activated to a level 3. As a mark of respect for those who have lost their lives and in solidarity with the military community and their families, flags at provincial government buildings across Alberta will be lowered to half-mast. In the days ahead, our thoughts will remain with everyone affected by this tragedy. Alberta stands with the Canadian Armed Forces, the people of Wainwright and all those grieving during this difficult time.

We are learning of a significant and tragic fire at CFB Wainwright today that is affecting many of our brave military personnel. Alberta’s government is in close contact with the Government of Canada and Prime Minister Mark Carney as this situation evolves. Thank you to the first responders and all those providing care and support to those affected.

Responsible growth means taking a commonsense approach to development. High-density infill policy in our major cities has had consequences no one intended, but need to be addressed. That’s why the Government of Alberta is bringing in a pause and a reset when it comes to high-density infill. Neighbours and families deserve predictability and livable communities that have reasonable plans for traffic congestion, parking, municipal services and development scaled to existing homes. A pause and a reset provides an opportunity for us to build communities that keep up with population growth without pitting neighbour against neighbour. I will work collaboratively with municipalities to ensure the approach to high-density infill is balanced with growth and communities that respect our neighbourhoods.

To a family, a home is more than a building. It’s where memories are made, milestones are celebrated, and years of hard work come together. For most people, it’s the biggest investment they’ll ever make. Residents in Calgary and Edmonton have been speaking up and raising concerns about how redevelopment and increased density are affecting their neighbourhoods. They deserve to have a say in how their communities change. Growth matters, but so does getting it right. Our government intends to stand with families and support responsible growth that respects the people who call these neighbourhoods home.

Happy Thanksgiving! Today, we take a moment to reflect on the many blessings we share and the people who make our province a place to call home. From our hardworking farmers and ranchers to the families, friends, and neighbours who strengthen our communities, there is so much to be grateful for. Wishing everyone a safe and blessed Thanksgiving.

These are more than just noisy voices. They are Albertans who care about their community and maintaining neighbourhoods that welcome generations to come. Nobody I’ve met disagrees with development, but the manufactured, forced high-density infill policy and blanket rezoning are having a real impact on the quality of life for many Edmontonians. We need to pause, reset, and have a thoughtful conversation about the neighbourhoods we all call home to get the right balance.

Over the past few months, endless Albertans have told us the same story. They saved for years to buy a single family home on a quiet street. They picked that neighbourhood on purpose, because of the park at the end of the block or the school two streets over or the neighbours who watch out for each other. Then one morning the house next door came down, with no notice, and later a 16 unit complex went up in its place, with nowhere for anyone to park and no consideration for the neighbourhood. Those are not complaints. They are people describing the place they built a life in with their family. So today we are acting. Edmonton will return to the density and height rules that were in place before 2024 and common sense minimum parking requirements, utility and water infrastructure considerations are coming back. Calgary will hold the line it set when it repealed blanket rezoning. Both cities will take a hard look at their bylaws and come back with something more balanced. Alberta needs more homes. We are building more of them than almost anywhere in Canada. But a home is more than a house, and a neighbourhood is more than a supply of lots.
