🚨🚨🚨I’m back. The MA Cannabis Control Commission has hired an outside investigator to probe numerous staff complaints against acting ED Debbie Hilton-Creek. Meanwhile, a whistleblower says agency managers planned to fix the results of a competitive software bid. #mapoli

The only thing this demonstrates is that people want weed, and that regulated retailers are the most convenient way to obtain it. Would very much be interested in a survey that asked consumers about their confidence in the accuracy of lab testing though.

I find it so telling that Dems don’t have a Project 2025 of their own. What is the liberal thesis for why govt isn’t working? How would they fix things like education, homelessness, or crime? How would they go beyond the mantra of protecting institutions and actually improve them? So much time arguing over the right way to perform Trump opposition when their real problem is lack of competing vision

Sloppy! But surprisingly common among nonprofits, many of which go defunct after a couple years and just kind of lapse into nonexistence without ever formally dissolving. Seems like the state usually looks the other way until someone complains bc most of the time it's benign.
In another twist for the Bay Staters saga — per the Massachusetts public charity filing database, Bay Staters Incorporated is no longer an active charity in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. According to the state database, the group has failed to file tax returns with the state Attorney General (and the IRS) for **3 years**

Eventually the IRS will revoke their 501c3/4 status. Wrote a similar story a few years ago about MPAA and I believe the AG send them a scolding letter and then they filed the paperwork, which is incredibly simple unless you take in a lot of money. bostonglobe.com/2020/09/09/m…

But you're 100% correct that nonprofits shouldn't be raising money if they're not properly registered and filing their reports... and obviously this is in the context of broader issues with the org. Did you ask for their 990s? By law they must be supplied upon request.

šŸ’Æ @Tori_Bedford is a treasure — by far the most thorough/nuanced reporter in Boston on this subject. She should do trainings for other newsrooms on best practices for covering unhoused people and people with SUD. She doesn’t require her subjects to earn their inherent dignity.

One of many odd examples of dysfunction in this story: the CCC’s own research director says she was stonewalled internally from obtaining cannabis testing results that might indicate fraud. Then the data were provided to outside researchers via public record request. #mapoli

Testing matters a lot. It protects consumers from contaminated products and helps them decide how much to consume. And businesses use testing results to price their flower (even though they probably shouldn’t, bc potency ≠quality). It’s a foundational promise of legalization.

The new revelations add to the series of scandals plaguing the struggling marijuana agency and come on the eve of a critical legislative oversight hearing. Proud to have worked on this with Eric Casey for the WBJ. Stay tuned for more.

I’m glad public opinion is finally (if slowly) turning against Gladwell, a smug, intellectually dishonest windbag so addicted to the mythology of his own reasonableness/insight that he feels entitled to make grand pronouncements connecting multiple subjects he knows little about.

It’s been clear for a while, but searching X for information on Milton as the hurricane made landfall last night proved what a true cesspit this platform has become.

To find real, up to date information, I resorted to googling Florida meteorologists and then manually navigating to their profiles. That is so stupid.

If X has such great AI why can’t it grok us the content we are actually looking for? And while we’re at it, why not empower users to report harmful fake content that crowds out real information as people are trying to navigate a life threatening emergency?
