New textbooks for Syrian schools for the 2025-2026 academic years, released under President Ahmad al-Sharaa, have changed how the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire is taught. The term "Great Arab Revolt" has been removed, and anti-Turkish statements have been softened. In the 2017-2018 edition, released during Assad's rule, it stated that the Great Arab Revolt (1916-1918), led by Sheikh Hussein, was aimed "at liberating Arab lands from Ottoman occupation and the rule of Turkish Unionists". In the new edition, this is called the "rebel movement of Hussein ibn Ali", whose goal was "to separate Arab lands from the Ottoman Empire". While the old text stated that the war in the East was waged "to liberate the peoples from the injustice of the Turks", the new text states that its goal was "to expel the Ottomans from this region".
