Autumnal Anointing Breezes brush the predawn day, anointed awake by the blessed breath of those who have uttered unctions of peace over you; who have prayed in the night for your deepest needs; who have bequeathed a benediction on your future and upon your dreams; who have held up hope when your arms have grown weary; who, with mercy, have salved all your wounds; who have learned the song that sings inside you; who have never forgotten your name; who have loved you enough to listen; who have chosen to pan the gold of you and bank on the prospect of personhood; who have watched with patience for the clearing of your streams; who have scattered, like leaves, their blessings upon your flowing life. —D. Beauty Looks Different Some say the essence of beauty lies in the alignment of things with an implied, unblemished ideal. But I feel this is only partially true. Beauty looks different to me now, in learning to love the scars. Seeing it only in perfection untethers beauty from being, from presence, from the real. Beauty surges with sap. Beauty beats with blood. Beauty leaks down into the eyes, and thus is beheld. Unknowingly lacking this insight, I bear the guilt of having erased the face of beauty’s priceless portrait. If we are to truly feel its texture, we must dare touch beauty’s blemishes, finding, within them, the wonder of our woundedness. Beauty looks different to me now when I see your face or see myself in the cracked mirror of the world. —D. Potts #poetry #photography #beauty
