My wife and I have both been self-employed since 2007. We’ve always been healthy and pay for our medical care with cash. Before Obamacare we had catastrophic high-deductible coverage for about $375/month. By 2016 the “Affordable” Care act pushed that catastrophic only premium up higher than our rent at the time. We were effectively priced out of the insurance market and shifted to a healthcare coop instead, which we’ve been with since. We’ve made exactly 1 relatively minor claim in the 9 years since then. It was for a diagnostic, which showed all clear. Fortunately, we’re healthy and continue to pay out of pocket for all our medical needs. But nothing about Obamacare helped us with our medical insurance costs.
