The EU/SSR is akin to the politburo of the Soviet Union
You can cancel an election and ban the winner from running (Romania), you can ban your opponents from ever running again (Hungary), you can threaten to ban the main opposition party and subject it to relentless investigations by the secret police (Germany), you can threaten a ban on the leading presidential candidate and make them wear an ankle monitor (France), every member of your circle can be investigated for corruption (Spain), you can try and cancel local elections because you will lose them (Britain), and you can storm the constitutional court with riot police because you want to control it (Poland).
You can just do all these things. The secret is you just have to be on the right side of the European Commission.

I think a rebrand to “The Ecommunist” is in order.
Lula may have won Brazil’s presidency, but almost half the country was willing to look past the Bolsonaros’ baggage. Right-wingers now make up the largest caucus in both houses. That will make it difficult for Lula to govern economist.com/the-americas/2…

A Nigerian man tried to fly from Dublin to Canada in 2023 using a lost Irish passport. He claimed a taxi driver gave it to him and told him Ireland wasn’t safe, so he should go to Canada. He pleaded guilty last month. The judge says the story doesn’t add up. He’s been working in a residential home for disabled people in Rosslare the entire time, and is still working there. That’s the quality of person being employed to take care of vulnerable people.

The charity, Liberty Recycling, is now being put into liquidation.
"There is income generated in Ireland and then there’s worldwide income, largely generated in African countries."
"The Garda National Economic Crime Bureau suspects that money flowing through the charity’s accounts seemed to have the “characteristics of money laundering” and that this involved “significant sums”
"Among the concerning aspects of the way the charity had been run, there were substantial international transfers of funds not connected with charity, and multiple for-profit companies “conflated with the charity” - set up with similar names, and at the same address, but with no oversight from the charity."
uh oh!
could there be a by-election on the cards??

Upon the release of the data below by the Economist & given the fact that most (if not all) western nations classify any individual holding the relevant passport/citizenship of that country as being Irish, British, German, French, Spanish etc. etc., I would assume these stats would show a far greater disproportionality if ethnicity/ancestry was factored in also.
Europes GDP per person is on its way to being 50% of that of America’s GDP person.
It once was 90%
JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon warns Europe is falling dangerously behind America economically… and blames anti-business, anti-investment, and anti-innovation policies. 🇺🇸🇪🇺
“If you don’t believe me, go to Europe, folks. Europe used to have a GDP per person of 90% of America’s. It’s now 65%. It’s on its way to 50%.
That will jeopardize the health of Europe itself over time.
And it’s all anti-business, anti-investment, anti-innovation. They kind of know it.
If they don’t fix it—and we should help them fix it, because Europe matters—it’s really bad for the Western world, too.
We should do it wisely.”
Europe shift over the past three decades has proven decimating for their economy. Aging population forces mass immigration in order to maintain adequate growth. Crazy regulation and bureaucracy slows innovation and investment… forcing the economy further down. At the same time, the United States has pulled ahead exponentially and will continue to do so. Europe is struggling.

Ireland must be the only developed country on Earth to have doubled the number of visas issued in the midst of a housing crisis.
Despite my attempted merciful extensions, when met with such ludicrously erroneous logic, eventually we have no choice but to instead assume avarice and calculated weakening.
It has to be purposeful corruption surely.
Critical skills is too vaguely defined.
We are one of, I would say the most eggregiously culpable, state that sends doctors, nurses and teachers abroad instead of training and hiring them.
We have an utterly surreal country.
No proper first world country should act like this.
Actually, many unemployed doctors can't specialize because there aren't enough places for training.
They are stuck in a horridly paralysed state in which they can't work in a specialization while there is simultaneously a massive staff shortage.
Even doctors who spent years through tough honest education end up on the dole.
40% of non-consultant hospital doctors here, the ones that choose here to work here, are basically in limbo for years when it comes to career progression.
It just makes no sense.
Our training culture is decades behind North America, continental Europe and Oceania.
The Health Service Executive treats medics more like firefighters than physicians.
Put them on a packed ward in Beaumont one year and then Roscommon the next, work them to exhaustion and then also expect them to gain skills in their spare time.
It would've been a dated model in the 70s even let alone 2026.
Yet here we are.
The competition for a degree place is obscene.
Every year hundreds of suitable candidates are turned away by what is essentially a lottery (anti-meritocracy) simply because the demand is so high and entry criteria is so strict.
With a bit of investment we could train triple the amount of doctors and ease the pressure.
The department has instead chosen to hire foreign doctors rather than train natives as the ostensive solution.
Because it's easier and cheaper.
For now.
But they will pay so much, so dearly later on down the line just in a different worse way.
