"Here we have an industry where they're now taking [the fish], ... it would be more logical to have the fish stay there and [tourists] come to Hawaii and go look at them." - Willy Kaupiko, Mayor of Miloli'i

Nobody should be keeping fish as pets. But bettas sold in tiny cups, in cold, stagnant water, is cruel even by pet industry standards.
It’s End Betta Cups Week (Oct 18-24). @Petco @PetSmart @petsuppliesplus @petsupermarkets, end the cups.

"It's still kinda sad to realise the fish you own now was actually once living happily in a massive ocean and is now living in a box of water." - Taylor Nicole Dean #thedarkhobby #documentary #fishwelfare #fishlives #fishcruelty #aquariumindustry #animalwelfare #fishfeels
Fish have nociceptors. They respond to harmful stimuli.
And yet we still debate whether they “feel pain” as though uncertainty gives us permission to hurt them.

Imagine being taken from the ocean, transported across countries, sold to a stranger and locked inside a glass box.
Then imagine being told this is a hobby.
The Dark Hobby asks us to look again at what we call “pet fish”.

We’d never accept keeping a dog in a tiny glass box just because it’s “pretty.”
The pet fish trade reduces living, sentient animals to decorations - bought on impulse and discarded when the novelty wears off.
Fish deserve more than a life as home décor. #FishWelfare #FishCruelty

#DIDYOUKNOW: Parrotfish are the ocean’s very own gardeners! 🪸
These vibrant fish play a vital role in keeping coral reefs healthy by grazing on algae and dead corals that can overgrow if left unchecked.

Three beluga whales have died at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium.
How many times do we have to move whales from one concrete tank to another before we admit that captivity isn’t a real solution?
Whales belong in the ocean, not aquariums.

Fish aren't decorations or props for a taxi. The constant movement, water turbulence, temperature changes and potential overcrowding can cause serious stress. This isn't cute - it's animal cruelty.

"The aquarium campaign didn't really begin in a moment. We identified threats to reef health. The first was gill nets, they are also known as 'walls of death'... they kill turtles."
