𝗙𝘂𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁: The first "data labeling" for AI can be traced back to the 1960s when researchers manually labeled images of faces to train early facial recognition systems, long before computers could even process images in color! #AI #Datalabeling #DataAnnotation

We were honored to join yesterday’s “AI Ni ya Who?” conversation at Nairobi’s Macmillan Library, where we explored how Kenyan labor sustains AI infrastructures under unfair conditions—and why time has come for workers to seize back their power. @untileverypod @siasaplace

At Macmillan Library for ‘AI Ni ya Who?’ to spotlight the invisible labour behind AI. We heard powerful reflections on how Kenyan workers fuel global AI systems under exploitative conditions and why reclaiming worker power in the age of tech is urgent.

The panel shed light on how digital labor, often invisible and undervalued, had fallen disproportionately on the shoulders of women—particularly from the global South—who faced informal working conditions, little recognition, and systemic exploitation in shaping the very platforms we all use. Panelists underscored the urgency of building a feminist internet, one that bridged the digital divide and amplified the voices of marginalized women across race, class, sexuality, and disability, so they too could access, shape, and thrive within digital spaces. The conversation pushed beyond critique, calling for a reimagining of digital power structures—where women could lead, be fairly compensated, and co-create inclusive, community-centered online spaces through feminist tech leadership and policy reform. #DRIF2025 #Lusaka #SafespacesKE @ParadigmHQ @NawiCollective
