A proposed supersite of AP1000s has just been announced in Appalachia.
The Nuclear Company just revealed plans to build up to six Westinghouse AP1000s on a single site in Lewis County, Kentucky.
If all six reactors get built, it would be the largest nuclear site ever developed in the U.S.
If the reactors are built in pairs, this would be the closest America has come to copying China’s recipe for nuclear success.
My team and I have spent the past year studying China’s nuclear program through Chinese primary sources, and there’s a clear pattern to their builds:
- 6 reactors planned per site built two at a time;
- Using a standard design they repeat over and over;
- With the same crews moving from one pair to the next.
Although a frozen reactor design is nice, nothing gets you more standardization than building on the same spot with the same team.
The site appears to sit along a major 765 kV transmission line in the Ohio River corridor (not a coincidence, I'm sure). But a full 6.6 GW will almost certainly need grid upgrades including additional outbound transmission.
This is a proposed project, not a done deal. And we're far enough out from Vogtle that building these reactors will require significant workforce training, standing up of supply chains, and coordination across many parties.
But oh boy, would be massive if The Nuclear Company pulls this off.
People hate change, but this makes the most sense. Right now, rural people, poor people with older cars, and those with trucks are disproportionately paying gas taxes. Urban people and those with newer fuel-efficient vehicles pay far less. Paying by miles driven is fair. #ncpol
While everyone is talking about the state gas tax here in NC, it may also be time to have a conversation about transitioning to a vehicle-miles-traveled tax for a more sustainable revenue source.

Here, in a nutshell, is why NatCon will fail. As their Jewish leadership hosts nationalists from around the world in Jerusalem & on Oct. 7, they are lectured by some post-liberal Groyper type on how he sees antisemitism (and the Holocaust) as largely Jewish tools of manipulation.
Americans, on the right especially, are exhausted by efforts to use the Holocaust as a moral obligation to support Israel.
They are unmoved by accusations of anti-Semitism and any hardline approaches to disavow and shame Israel's critics.

This response by @Jacob_Rees_Mogg to @TuckerCarlson claiming that Russia isn't suppressing dissidents is my favorite moment of any Tucker interview, full stop: "Whaaaat?"
Magnificent. This clip will serve as the response to most of Tucker's blathering going forward.

North Carolina families and farmers are feeling the impacts of rising fuel costs every day. They need real relief and they need it now.
Today, @ncspeakerhall and I agreed to call the #NCGA back for a special session to provide relief from high gas and diesel prices for all North Carolinians. Additional details forthcoming. #ncpol

The media markets, not the cities themselves. The Charlotte media market covers 22 counties alone. The Raleigh market covers 23.
Conservatives just won many battles in the fight to reward merit and against race-based "noticing." Those immediately pivoting to "nevermind, forget merit; we just want more whites" apparently weren't really against race preferences, just the direction of it.

Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Missing important context: National Merit Scholars are selected by a purely merit-based process. Out of 1.3 million PSAT/NMSQT test takers, the top 50,000 scorers are recognized as high scorers, and the top 16,000 scorers are recognized as National Merit Semifinalists.

I can't wait to watch the @reason documentary about the disaster of socialism in Venezuela.
My friend @jimepstein made it and there is no one I trust more because of his knowledge of Venezuela, documentary skills, and LOVE for freedom and Venezuelans than him to do this.

A very Happy Yeltsin Supermarket Day to all who celebrate!
This happens every time. Massive pools of money go in; very few homes get built. This is why I suggested that we do what insurance companies do. They don't waste years trying to micromanage your repairs. They just verify the damage then cut you a check. carolinajournal.com/opinion/…
It has been revealed that the City of Asheville, NC, will reportedly rebuild only 8 houses using the $225 million grant it received from the Trump administration following Hurricane Helene.
That's correct…..Eight.…out of 11,488 damaged homes.
The city allocated only $3 million for home repairs.
Meanwhile, $14.9 million was allocated for “administration.”
That means nearly five times more was allocated for administration than for repairing homes for people affected by the disaster.
And that's not the worst of it….
More than 100 approved families are reportedly currently on a waitlist for assistance that they may never receive.
After receiving the $225 million federal grant, Asheville residents deserve answers about exactly where the money is going — and how much is actually reaching families whose homes were damaged or destroyed. @asheville @AvlWatchdog H/T Deep Leaks
It's always worth making the process faster and more efficient, but we should also celebrate how far NC has already come in making housing easier to build with permit shot clocks & approval deadlines etc. One reason why people from places at the top of this list move here. #ncpol
Where in America can new homes get permitted and built fastest? And are we getting faster or slower over time?
In a new paper with @leonardo_damico and Audrey Wang, we show cities like Raleigh typically *finish* construction before cities like San Francisco even approve it.

A $5,000 “dividend” if Republicans win is not a surplus rebate. It is a campaign check.
The national debt just crossed $40 trillion. This promise costs on the order of $1.2–$1.35 trillion. Tariff revenue does not cover that. Congress would have to borrow it.
So the pitch is: elect us, and we will put another trillion-plus on the card and mail you a piece of it. That is the thing conservatives once called vote-buying and fiscal suicide when the other party did it. And we were right to do so.
Calling it a dividend does not change the condition or the balance sheet.
