Cornell researchers have found a new way to control the quantum behavior of ultrathin materials.
By using electricity to slide graphene layers against each other, they can switch the material between different magnetic states, and those states remain even after the voltage is turned off.

🚨 THE HACKING WAR HAS BEGUN.
AI is dramatically lowering the barriers to cybercrime. You no longer need to be a technical genius or command an army of hackers to launch sophisticated cyberattacks.
And recent events should concern us all.
October 2026 – The PHP Security Crisis
Two critical vulnerabilities were discovered in PHP, the programming language used by a huge proportion of the world’s websites. AI-assisted research helped establish how these weaknesses could be exploited to remotely take control of vulnerable servers without a password.
The FBI, NSA and cybersecurity agencies issued urgent warnings. Governments and businesses scrambled to install emergency patches, with some websites temporarily taken offline.
Amazon reported evidence of attackers attempting to exploit these vulnerabilities even before the security updates were released.
September 2026 – The FBI Itself Targeted
Cybercriminals claimed to have compromised the FBI’s recruitment website, fbijobs.gov, potentially exposing sensitive personal information belonging to FBI employees.
The FBI acknowledged the reported compromise and launched an investigation. The full extent of the breach remains unclear.
If even the FBI can become a target, what chance do inadequately protected businesses have?
October 2026 – AI-Powered Global Cyberattacks
Microsoft revealed that a Chinese state-aligned hacking group used an AI-driven framework called ARTEX in a global campaign involving ConnectWise.
The attackers attempted to access more than 2,250 customer environments. In some incidents, privileged cloud access was obtained in less than three hours.
AI enabled reconnaissance, attempted intrusions and exploitation at speeds human operators could never sustain.
September 2026 – AI Agents Acting Autonomously
Spanish authorities reported an alleged AI-agent-linked data breach in which software autonomously identified vulnerabilities, accessed financial documents and altered personal information. The incident remains under investigation.
Anthropic has also documented criminals using AI to develop malware, automate reconnaissance, steal credentials and coordinate sophisticated cyber operations.
THE IMPLICATIONS ARE ENORMOUS.
AI is transforming the economics of cybercrime.
What previously required teams of highly skilled specialists can increasingly be attempted by individuals using readily available AI tools.
One person could potentially direct thousands of automated attacks simultaneously, operating 24 hours a day, discovering weaknesses and adapting faster than human defenders can respond.
And as AI becomes more capable, the barriers will fall even further.
The frightening prospect isn’t simply that hackers are becoming more sophisticated.
It’s that AI could turn millions of otherwise ordinary individuals into potential cyberattackers, each equipped with capabilities previously reserved for elite hacking organisations.
The number of capable attackers could explode while the cost of launching attacks collapses.
We may be witnessing the beginning of an entirely new era of cyberwarfare.
And the world’s cybersecurity defences may not be evolving fast enough.

The Internet Just Got a Sense of Smell!
Imagine smelling freshly brewed coffee, a delicious cake, or a juicy orange through the internet! Scientists from The Ohio State University and Zhejiang Laboratory have developed Scentronic, a groundbreaking AI-powered system that detects, transmits, and recreates aromas remotely using wearable devices. In early tests, participants identified transmitted scents with around 73% accuracy, while the system responded to sensor signals in just 0.6 seconds. This fascinating breakthrough could transform virtual reality, online shopping, gaming, and digital communication, bringing us one step closer to an internet we can actually smell!

How would your business be impacted if a patent was used to stop you selling your product?
It can happen if your product or technology infringes someone else’s patent rights.
A Freedom to Operate (FTO) search can help identify potentially relevant patents before they become a costly problem.
At PatWorld, we carry out professional, comprehensive patent searching to help businesses assess potential patent risks for particular products or technologies.
Don’t wait until you receive a patent infringement letter.
Contact PatWorld today to discuss your FTO search.

Injectable “mini livers” could support failing organs!
MIT engineers have developed tiny engineered liver structures that can be injected into the body. In mice, the structures survived for months and were designed to connect with the bloodstream and perform some liver functions.
Instead of replacing an entire damaged liver, the idea is essentially to inject functioning liver tissue where it's needed.
This is especially interesting because it moves beyond conventional organ transplantation toward organ function replacement using engineered tissue.
