A private geospatial intelligence firm said it examined 40 missile and drone attacks against Saudi Arabia by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen and militias in Iraq between July 1 and Oct. 19. Good morning from Mount Carmel. Cloudy with some sunshine.
Election results are still incomplete and moods are oscillating. Here are a few certainties, though:
* Netanyahu lost his nationalist-racist-ultra orthodox majority.
* We should hug the 7 October survivors and families, many of whom are in deep pain because the government of massacre is not more decisively ousted.
* Israel‘s liberal-democratic muscle was indeed flexed to the utmost, and guess what? We can’t declare victory without our Arab fellow citizens. This is good. A discourse of Jewish-Arab political partnership is fast becoming the new normal.
* Renewed war against Iran, as Netanyahu and Trump are plotting, spells further political danger and mayhem.
* I and likeminded Israelis remain resilient, alert and very cautiously hopeful. If you have read this far, I will add that it’s my birthday and I may sign off for a while.

A few notes on the Israeli elections:
- Ignore the early partial counts: Voting tally speed varies significantly across the country, for instance, results from many Arab towns are still pending. In the latest update of tallies Raam gained 2 more seats. The final votes to be counted are the "double envelopes" (primarily around 150,000 soldiers and active-duty reservists). Because this group is demographically distinct from the general population, with negligible Haredi and Arab representation, their votes typically cause late shifts in seat distribution.
- Exit poll adjustments: Overnight, TV networks updated their exit polls using real results from sample polling stations to adjust for late voters and those who misled pollsters. This shifted roughly three seats in favor of the Netanyahu bloc. Still, he remains short of the 61-seat majority needed to form a government.
- The leaders of the 3 of the opposition parties, Eisenkott, Bennet and Lieberman, have to break one of their core campaign promises, or Israel will head to another election in six months. In the interim, Netanyahu would remain caretaker PM leading a minority in the Knesset, which could allow the opposition majority to pass key legislation, including establishing a State Commission of Inquiry into the failures that led to the October 7th massacre.
- Netanyahu's strategy: The core promises from these three leaders were to exclude Netanyahu, exclude Arab parties, and exclude Haredi parties from a coalition. Netanyahu’s "victory" speech and political track record indicate he will not abandon his ultra-Orthodox alliance. Instead, he aims to pressure right-leaning opposition leaders to abandon their principles and join his government on his terms (much as Benny Gantz did previously, destroying his own political credibility).
- The consequences of racism: Netanyahu, the Right, and their media ecosystem have systematically delegitimized Arab political participation or reliance on Arab party votes. Currently, "The Democrats" is the only opposition party advocating for a joint Jewish-Arab coalition. The three right/centrist opposition leaders who reject Arab inclusion must now decide: bow to Netanyahu's narrative, thereby depriving themselves of power and giving Bibi another shot to win the elections in 6 months, or cooperate with Arab parties to have them support the government from the opposition. Such a government won't be stable, but it could get important things done for all of Israel's citizens.

In the view of the Highest Yoga Tantra (HYT), we sidestep this issue.
We focus on what we can know: phenomena (an M-N word) arise, endure, and decay.
We see this every day a million times.
Thoughts arise in our minds (M-N-). They endure, momentarily. Then they decay and are replaced by newly arising thoughts (Nagarjuna is the guru on this - Nagarjuna's
Mulamadhyamakakārikā (OUP translation by Jay Garfield entitled ‘The Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way’).
Our cells arise, endure, then decay. Our energy (Mana), institutions, bodies, continents,…. arise, endure, decay…
These thoughts arise from Causes. Virtuous Causes provoke virtuous effects and non-virtuous causes provoke non-virtuous effects: this is the essence of the iron law of karma (cause and effect).
The quality of ALL of these arising, enduring, decaying phenomena, according to HYT, in Ultimate Reality is Emptiness and Compassion.
Synonyms of Emptiness are: Dependent Arising (see that Cause and Effect again - we’re not even looking for the primary cause. We’re focusing on the system as we found it, already working), Selflessness (the effect isn’t generating itself. It is being generated by a Cause- it is therefore selfless).
‘Emptiness’ is easier to grasp for those who believe in the quantum theory. Go small enough and you get air, energy, light.
And so if this is accepted - the ultimate nature of reality is emptiness then all our bad thoughts are as empty as our cells, bodies, body politic, - they’re non-existent. They’re empty. They’re as meaningless, from the perspective of ultimate reality
And the purpose of all this is to prepare us for the hallucinations we’ll experience as we go through the death process. If we don’t get frightened by them if we understand in that moment we are going through the death process (decaying) that these negative hallucinations and monsters and regrets are empty, like everything else.
That they are emanations (another M-N- word) from our empty minds and so are not worth getting stressed over. The promise of HYT is that in that moment of the death process if we realise the nature of ultimate reality is emptiness and compassion, then we will have the peace of mind to notice the right light to follow and not become distracted.
This is all in HHDL’s intro to the penguin edition to the Book of the dead - graham Coleman version. It bears reading repeatedly, inmho.
This is also useful in the moment we experience any sense of psychological panic, say, in work - we know our bodies are emptiness and our minds therefore so are the thoughts which are dependent on our empty bodies. If we can develop the focus, insight and perspective to look at ourself, in the moment of a conflict, say, with our boss or a vastly annoying colleague… And if we correctly recognise that whatever is going on is emptiness then we will have the presence of mind to respond deliberately.
We will act deliberately in the moment virtuously and as a result of a strategic choice, not merely from an emotional perspective. So whether or not we manage while going through the death process to realise the emptiness of the hallucinogenic phenomenon and therefore become able to control our continuity of consciousness, in these daily conflicts that arise, endure and decay in our bourgeois lives the mere recognition that what we’re experiencing is emptiness and that we’re empty and that ultimate reality is emptiness and compassion might help us be more virtuous. We operate in Conventional Reality but understanding the nature (emptiness and compassion) of ultimate reality can help us navigate Conventional Reality.
