Vancouver rent was so expensive that university student Tim Chen found it cheaper to fly to class twice a week. In February 2024, UBC student Tim Chen explained that renting a one-bedroom would cost him roughly C$2,500 a month. Instead, he lived rent-free with his parents in Calgary, and commuted by plane. He only needed to attend campus two days a week. Each round trip cost around C$150, bringing his monthly flight bill to roughly C$1,200. His routine: fly to Vancouver in the morning, attend class, take the bus back to the airport and fly home that night. Eight return trips a month still cost less than half the rent he’d been quoted.

If you look closely enough, breakthroughs in everything are accelerating exponentially. An exponential always starts off looking small.
this might be my last normal tweet before biotech goes vertical i'm not a whistleblower. I don't work at Lilly, Novo or any of the big labs but there is a massive shift happening in human biology right now. it's sitting in press releases and almost nobody reads them the last 6 months alone: - a once-daily pill roughly doubled median survival in metastatic pancreatic cancer (13.2 vs 6.6 months) - a one-time gene editing infusion cut hereditary angioedema attacks 87%, and 62% of patients stayed attack-free and off all other prevention for 6 months - a one-time gene edit for cholesterol dropped LDL up to 62%, and it held for over a year - a personalized mrna vaccine beat keytruda alone in a 1,137 patient melanoma phase 3 - retatrutide hit ~28% weight loss in a phase 3 - an ai-designed drug entered phase 3 - a pill that regrows hair passed its second phase 3 - an immunotherapy that could let some rectal cancer patients skip surgery, chemo and radiation just got fda approved - a man lived 271 days off dialysis on a pig kidney - human cells were caught passing chromosome-sized chunks of DNA to their neighbors, and it changes how the neighbors behave we are on the verge of an era where the human body is a software problem and the update cycle gets shorter everyday stick around, it's going to get weird bio/acc

A Marine told us that at more than 75% of the CUAS demos he goes to, nothing gets shot down. Last week, groups from across the DoW watched @sentradel destroy dozens of drones. We've been doing it for over a year, with a system that costs under $100K.

This is what governance should look like. Not just passing laws, but enforcing accountability through independent investigations, financial scrutiny and regulatory action. 🇸🇬 Singapore is stepping up action against companies potentially linked to the haze-causing fires in Indonesia. DPM Gan Kim Yong, Senior Minister K Shanmugam and Minister Grace Fu met senior executives representing 10 Singapore-based companies on 28 October. Former PAP MP and Senior Counsel Davinder Singh has also been appointed as the government's legal adviser and coordinator for the investigations. Here's what's happening: 1. All 10 companies have agreed to cooperate with investigations. 2. Companies must appoint independent investigation and legal teams from a government-selected panel, at their own expense. 3. Investigators will examine operations, supply chains, corporate ownership and business relationships. Companies are expected to provide full access to documents, premises and relevant information. 4. Parliament will consider amendments to the Transboundary Haze Pollution Act from 3 November. Failure to cooperate with appointed investigators could become a criminal offence. 5. MAS is also stepping in. Banks are expected to assess environmental risks involving their customers. They can review financing conditions, restrict further lending or exit relationships where serious breaches are established. Shanmugam made another point clear. If companies found responsible decide to leave Singapore because of the investigations, the government is prepared to accept that. Importantly, these investigations are about establishing facts. None of the 10 companies has been found guilty merely because they received notices. After more than a decade of haze investigations, Singapore is now looking beyond plantation fires to corporate structures, financing and accountability. The real test of governance is whether investigations lead to enforcement and consequences, and whether the pressure continues even after the haze clears. straitstimes.com/singapore/g…
When Shanmugam gets involved, you know Singapore means business and is prepared to hit those responsible where it hurts. He's served under four Prime Ministers, starting with LKY, and knows how to get things moving. This is not going to be fun for those involved. 😅 Full: youtu.be/BOnUR9rG-6M

Soeharto pun pulang. Tapi ia penasaran: apakah ia telah memilih orang pintar jadi pengelola negara. Maka ia memanggil menteri kesayangannya, Harmoko. “Pak Harmoko. Ada yang ingin saya sampaiken. Pak Harmoko coba menjawab, siapakah anak daripada bapakmu, anak daripada ibumu, tapi bukan saudara daripada kamu.” Harmoko cepat menjawab, “Mohon petunjuk untuk tindak lanjutnya, Pak.” Soeharto agak kesal, tapi ia masih menyimpan harapan. “Coba Pak Harmoko mencari jawabannya ke menteri-menteri lain.” Maka Harmoko undur diri. Setelah tak memperoleh jawaban dari Soedharmono, Akbar Tanjung, dll; akhirnya Harmoko menemui Habibie. Habibie tertawa saja. “Pak Harmoko, jawabannya adalah saya sendiri!” Harmoko langsung cerah.
