We are a group within APTP. Our goal is to defund Oakland's Police budget by 50% & invest that money in community, one of the many steps towards abolition.

The City Council meeting about the Oakland budget is starting in a few minutes. This is the most imp meeting of the year. Call in and tell the Council Members you reject @lorenmtaylor's "compromise". The "compromise" means giving even more resources to the police.

The OPD's $7.5 MM ask from CIP budget for a "violence prevention office" disappeared after pushback last month. But now it's back under a much more humble name, for $5 MM. Was slid back into the budget last week, quietly.

DIVEST FROM OPD, FUND THE PEOPLE!! Hundreds of people turned out tonight to the People’s Budget Block Party and Mutual Aid Fair on the eve of what could be a historic Oakland City Council vote. #DefundOPD #WeKeepUsSafe #MutualAid #PeoplesBudgetBlockParty
We must use COVID relief dollars to give Oaklanders relief, not train new cops!! Tell city council to reject the @LorenMTaylor amendment to fund a new police academy with our relief money — & to keep their promise to reimagine safety! bit.ly/defund_opd @DanKalb @NoelGallo5

Even the Oakland Police Chief, LaRonne Armstrong, admits that the current approach to policing does not work, no matter how much money we waste on cops. Maybe he should tell Libby and Loren that more cops won't keep us safe?

Taylor should explain how he expects to pay for academies w/ARPA funds. The only permissible use for ARPA is when it bridges Covid-reduced revenue to cover spending. Deliberately increasing spending with intention of using ARPA to cover seems a bad faith interpretation at least
Join us @DefundOPD and @APTPaction for a mutual aid block party TODAY at 5pm!
WHO: You and the Defund Police Coalition WHAT: Defund Police Block party & Mutual Aid Fair -- free food, music by Kumbia Net, free diapers, school supplies, and more WHERE: 1419 34th Avenue, Oakland WHEN: Wednesday at 5pm WHY: #DefundOPD See you there

The change is also in the City's recently published budget errata. The money was already allocated from KK for OPD, but it appears that the City is looking for way to refer to the expenditure in a way that doesn't make people's stomach turn...and may have not yet found it

Last month, I reported City had removed a $7.5 MM Capital Improvements budget request to create a "violence prevention" office at court bldg adjacent to Police HQ [PAB]. But it's back in latest revision, slightly cheaper aka "OPD Improvements to County Side of PAB"

It's disingenuous of Libby to pretend she cares about our unhoused neighbors while she continues to criminalize poverty. teapawt.org/LibbySchaaf/status/140…
Great news! Lake Merritt Lodge now houses 90+ formerly unsheltered Oakland seniors. Residents are supported with critical services, mental health care, and counseling to assist on their path to a permanent home.

Instead of allocating more funds to Housing or Human Services, Schaaf wants to 📈 overtime for OPD’s homelessness unit to $1.5 MILLION for 2021-23. Rather than serving Oakland’s unhoused residents, Schaaf trashes their stuff and pays OPD huge salaries to guard garbage trucks.

Replying to @hyphy_republic
In response to Hofer's statement that OPD often stretches truth on need for measures, Assistant Chief Drennon Lindsay "confirms" that an ALCO Sheriff deputy was seriously injured by an incendiary device that could be described as a molotov cocktail.

Just FYI, Armstrong's partner who is also a Deputy Police Chief said there was evidence of molotovs as recently as May, in a discussion at the Oakland Privacy Commission
Breaking: Oakland Police Chief Armstrong said at a press conference today that his claims that protesters were preparing Molotov cocktails at last year’s 6/1 George Floyd protest were wrong. Police weren’t justified in using tear gas and rubber bullets on protesters.

Armstrong is still not framing this honestly. He makes it sound like this was unvetted information provided in the days after. While that was part of it, OPD repeated the lie in a public meeting just a few weeks ago and said there was evidence. teapawt.org/DarwinBondGraha/status…
Replying to @DarwinBondGraha
OPD Captain Tony Jones says there is, in fact, body camera video of officers having Molotov cocktails thrown at them on the nights of the protest. He doesn't say what night. He says he doesn't know why they haven't been made public.

So the department lied about this for a year. teapawt.org/DarwinBondGraha/status…

After the police ran the budget into ruin over two years, Schaaf has the gaul to say that the only thing that rescued us and allowed us to avoid laying off non police workers was ARPA. You spent the city into ruin, smh.
