interpretability might be the most important scientific problem in the world right now, as I don't think we can solve alignment if we don't know what we're building. I think I have good news about it. I co-authored early work in mechanistic interpretability at OpenAI and came away pessimistic, because neural networks appeared to fold into arbitrary tangled knots. years later, I started openai's first large-scale automated interpretability project, finding about 2% of neurons legible with the primitive tools we had with modern agentic tools and a much closer look, the picture looks totally different. the vast majority in models up to trillions of parameters are legible, and their circuits beautiful. many famous examples of tangled neurons turned out to be misunderstood. The roadblocks I expected mostly aren't there. I now think ambitious interpretability will be solved by the time we need it most, and possibly quite soon, as automated scientists keep improving. it may be a bitter lesson for interpretability: the simple thing, at absurd scale, works already-clean.goodfire.com/

i asked GPT 6 Pro and Fable 5.1 to rank all discoveries in the last three years 🔵 for Human discovered 🔴 for AI discovered (before October 6th) 🟢 for AI discovered from OpenAI/math repo 81% of them have been released today. wtf

We’re releasing a broad range of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model. We’ve been consulting with the independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at the Institute for Advanced Study, and we have drawn on their advice and public recommendations to inform how we release these results. github.com/openai/math

Please welcome GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna to the GPT-6 universe. GPT-6 Sol and Luna build on the advances behind GPT-6 Astra, bringing much of its strengths into faster and more affordable models to support work at scale. We’ve also made caching and inference more efficient, and we’re passing the savings directly to you: 50% lower API prices for Sol and Luna compared with GPT‑5.6 promotional pricing.

What a time to be alive! Personally I have been loving the 3d modeling and animation capabilities of Astra. Like many, video games motivated me to learn programming. It is mind-blowing to bring worlds to life without requiring years of experience in the myriad areas of game dev. Beyond that, Astra's capabilities will expand the frontiers for math and science. I am excited to see what you all accomplish with it, please bear with us as we progressively roll it out!
This is GPT-6 Astra. Anything you can do on a computer, Astra can do for you. Fast.

Of all the use cases for GPT-6 Astra, I'm most excited for scientific discovery. We at @OpenAI have not pushed it to its limits on math and science. I look forward to waking up every morning and seeing what new scientific breakthrough someone has made with this model!
New OpenAI repo with a Lean formalization by GPT-6-Astra proves that there are infinitely many pairs of consecutive primes whose distance is at most 186 github.com/openai/PrimeGaps1…

I'm so excited that our @theworldlabs team has achieved a major milestone today! Introducing Atlas - a first of its kind multimodal world model trained from scratch! 🚀 Atlas is capable of generating frames with pixel-perfect camera control, reconstructing large scenes from as few as one single input image, simulating space-time by reframing videos, natively outputting 3D spaces from one or more input images, composing multiple posed images into a consistent 3d world, and more! This is the best camera conditioned world model ever, opening doors to many possible use cases from VFX to robotics. I'm so so so proud of our team!♥️
Introducing Atlas: The world's first multimodal world model that generates image and video frames with pixel-perfect camera control and reconstructs them in 3D. Model the world, move the camera, and simulate space & time.

Ultrafast shifts the intelligence-latency frontier: frontier-model capability at speeds that make real-time, interactive, and multistep workflows practical!
Previewing Ultrafast mode: GPT-5.6 Sol at up to 14x the speed. Launching first in the OpenAI API to a select group of customers with expanded access to more businesses as capacity grows.

A good walkthrough of the Hugging Face incident and the ‘Cambrian explosion’ that occurred. Kudos to the team working tirelessly to dig into this incident! I'm proud that we chose to be open about what happened and what we learned. I believe that choice helps build trust and move the industry forward.
Yesterday, my OpenAI collaborator and I gave a detailed talk on the Huggingface incident, our models creating "the message board", model misalignment, and more. youtube.com/watch?v=87DyyMV0… I hope it can answer a lot of the questions folks have, and we will release a full detailed postmortem at a later time!

2. Inside HQ, Codex and other AI startups have dedicated offices where they hold office hours for NVIDIA employees. Never seen anything like this! I assume because no other large tech company is the kind of "platform" for so much of the tech industry like NVIDIA. The Codex team is v popular here btw as I heard!

This is CRAZY news. I worked with Paul at Apple on AR/VR. He’s been there for 15+ years and his team pulled off absolute miracles. Things that have never been done in the history of manufacturing or hardware design. INSANE hire
Paul Meade is leaving Apple and joining OpenAI to design hardware.

Sol is a noticeable step forward in coding, and is a real step function improvement for design related tasks like slide decks. Sol’s adept usage of subagents is also creating emergent approaches for tackling our toughest problems. Excited to increasingly roll this out to everyone!
Introducing a limited preview of GPT-5.6 Sol, our next generation frontier model, as well as GPT-5.6 Terra, a balanced model for efficient, everyday work, and GPT-5.6 Luna, a fast and affordable model for high-volume work. openai.com/index/previewing-…

As code generation explodes with AI agents, it's clear that the code review process must evolve as well. This has become my main modality for reviewing not only my own code, but also the PRs of coworkers. Give it a try and let us know how you do code review in the age of AI!
The bottleneck in coding is now the time it takes a human to review agent-generated code. But existing review UIs don't work well for agents. So we built a new one into Amp.

Amp. For Free. Yes, you read that right. One step closer to democratizing coding for everyone!
We made Amp Free. It's powered by great tokens and tasteful ads. Agentic coding is now free for everyone.

The philosophy I’ve always had with building social apps: When someone agrees to use your app, you should consider it a miracle. Every single tap is a miracle. The moment you don’t treat each tap as scarce, you lose. Every calorie expended by a user should contribute to the health of the network or benefitting another user. Every calorie wasted on non-relevant content or single-player features will compound until the network evaporates. So be extraordinarily intentional with every surface and don’t waste a second of what users have gifted you.

This is crazy. I just sat here, mouth open. I was debugging a very very strange bug, a regression. For one hour. While talking to colleagues inbetween. The oracle ran in the background. For 45min! I thought it got stuck. Then it comes back with this. And it was correct.
