What happens after you achieve the thing you thought would change everything? I’ll be writing more about this on Being HumanKind this weekend, but this thought came from a podcast conversation I had with Scott Spiezio on Running Ahrens.
In business and leadership, we spend a lot of time focused on goals. Growth. Revenue. Recognition. The next role. The next big opportunity. And goals matter. They give us direction and push us forward. But achievement doesn’t automatically give us meaning.
Scott reached the highest level of professional baseball and won two World Series championships. Yet our conversation on Running Ahrens is much less about baseball than it is about identity, resilience, failure, rebuilding, and figuring out who you are when the accomplishments are no longer enough.
I think there’s an important leadership lesson in that. Our careers are part of our story. They shouldn’t become our entire identity.
The strongest leaders I know continue asking bigger questions: Who am I becoming? How am I showing up for the people around me? What am I building beyond the next accomplishment?
I’m grateful Scott was willing to have such an open conversation with me.
