When challenges come, we rise—together. If you’re facing flood damage, the City of Detroit and the Great Lakes Water Authority are stepping in to cover the cost of damages and pay for anything insurance will not cover—because no one should have to recover alone.

The water in Detroit is safe to drink as it travels from the treatment plant to your home. The notifications residents received are federally required by the EPA and identifies your service line (the pipe leading from the water main to your home) material as lead, galvanized, or unknown, however, that does not mean your drinking water is contaminated. ALL CITIES are required to mail similar letters to their residents.   As of November 2024, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires every city and township with lead service lines to mail notification letters to every property with a known lead service line, known galvanized service line, or a service line of unknown material that may be lead. Detroit’s Drinking continues to be safe to use -- meeting or exceeding Safe Drinking Water Act standards -- the purpose of the letters and the information the public needs to know, and that employee crews and contractors continue to replace lead service lines at an accelerated pace.
