The secret to retaining friendships and relationships, I've come to realise, is remarkably simple: say less. Don't offer unsolicited truths, don't give reality checks, don't point out contradictions, don't tell people what you actually think. Apparently, relationships thrive on a healthy diet of selective honesty and strategic silence.
The more you grow up, the more you realise that sometimes the only thing standing between you and a perfectly intact relationship is something you chose not to say.
And perhaps that's the real social contract: don't disturb someone's version of reality, and they'll happily keep you in theirs.
