BREAKING: Abbott Laboratories has agreed to pay $384 million after shipping contaminated infant formula powder. The plant had leaky roofs that dripped water onto the production line and delayed cleaning equipment. "No company should be gambling on the health and safety of our Nation’s infants by allowing unsanitary conditions" In February 2022 Abbott recalled lots of powdered Similac, Alimentum, and EleCare after credible reports of infections, and shut down the plant for months, causing a nationwide formula shortage. In November 2023, a 13-day-old Kentucky infant died suddenly from Cronobacter after consuming formula made at this same plant in Illinois. In 2010 Abbott recalled roughly 5 million cans of Similac from the same Sturgis plant because of possible insect (beetle/larvae) parts in the product. Seems more important than ever to breast feed, or use alternatives to mystery powders from dirty factories.
