The thing about @saalevine is he's a public servant for this moment.
Against the backdrop of lawlessness and corruption we see daily, there's Sam--courageous and brilliant--who fought predatory foreclosures as a *law student* before taking that ethos to the @FTC. There he used his energy and intellect to shut down terrible practices, often in the most scam-ridden parts of the economy. And yet, he is measured, relentlessly fair, and enforces the law without fear or favor.
Sam is the real deal. Congratulations to the people of New York City and to Mayor-Elect @ZohranKMamdani on an excellent choice to lead DCWP.
Zohran Mamdani is announcing his new @helloDCWP commissioner: Sam Levine, the former director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. Antitrust and consumer protection will be animating the incoming Mamdani administration

Congress designed the @FTC as an independent commission to resist political pressure. That’s not a bug, it’s a critical feature. #SCOTUS must reject Trump’s illegal attempts to undo a century of law and protect the #FTC. @verge @RKSlaughterFTC

Wild to see @Meta applauding a “Scam Center Strike Force” when 10% of its revenue comes from targeting users with scam ads.
Meta applauds the DOJ and its partners for launching the Scam Center Strike Force to combat sophisticated scam operations targeting Americans and others. We've worked with US and international law enforcement to investigate and disrupt such networks, and we look forward to continuing this work with the Scam Center Strike Force.

⚖️📚 The #EUCommission has secretly set in motion a potentially massive reform of the #GDPR. If internal drafts become reality, this would have significant impact on people's fundamental right to #privacy and data protection.

OpenAI has sent a legal request to the family of Adam Raine, the 16yo who died by suicide following lengthy chats with ChatGPT, asking for a full attendee list to his memorial, as well as photos taken or eulogies given.
His lawyers told the FT this was "intentional harassment"

Loyalty programs promise deals. But behind the points and perks, many have become powerful data-harvesting machines. @saalevine and I published a new joint report: The Loyalty Trap cdn.vanderbilt.edu/vu-URL/wp… @vanderbiltlaw @UCBConsumerLaw

Florida is accusing Roku of selling detailed info on kids to Kochava, the data broker battling @FTC over rampant privacy abuses. This follows a similar suit by Michigan’s AG.
With progress against broker abuses stalling under @AFergusonFTC, it’s great to see states stepping up.

Thrilled to file this and to do it with @amandalws. Public access to court filings is a foundation of our democracy. If you want to see and understand what's happening in a case affecting your rights or those of your stakeholders, this is how you do it. Don't let the powerful hide behind protective orders. Force them to play by the rules and justify every single redaction.

Secretive. Corporate-led. Anti-worker. Trump’s new trade talks with India are more of the same.

For its twelfth corporate pardon, Trump’s #CFPB has absolved Comerica Bank for sabotaging its program to administer federal benefits payments to senior citizens, people with disabilities and unbanked people. What a disgrace.

TACD strongly opposes the U.S. administration’s use of coercive tariffs to pressure the EU over legitimate digital, consumer protection, and sustainability policies. Trade retaliation should not undermine laws designed to safeguard people’s rights. tacd.org/tacd-opposes-the-us…

Don’t worry - we aren’t. We are still commissioners. We’re suing to make that clear for everyone.
This is a really good point. I don't think either @BedoyaFTC or @RKSlaughterFTC should accept that they have been fired, at least until the Supreme Court overrules Humphrey's Executor.

I am a commissioner at the Federal Trade Commission. The president just illegally fired me. This is corruption plain and simple. My full statement:

BREAKING: Trump just fired an entire team of CFPB public servants who helped uncover financial wrongdoing, out-of-control AI, and consumer harm. This is a win for Big Tech & Wall Street, and a loss for everyday people.

Why you should care about what’s happening to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

Vought is giving big banks and giant corporations the green light to scam families.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has returned over $21 billion to families cheated by Wall Street. Republicans have failed to gut it in Congress and in the courts. They will fail again.
