April is child abuse awareness month. As a survivor, I have heard:
“You are stronger now because of the abuse.”
“I bet your abusers were abused to.”
“I’m sure others have had it even worse.”
What I needed to hear:
“That was not supposed to happen. Are you ok?”
In 2019, 22.9% of confirmed maltreatment victimes were removed from their homes because of an investigation or alternative response. The remaining victimes are more likely to run away from an abusive home and then become the target of #humantrafficking.
