Have you ever looked at a name and thought "whoa, how do they pronounce their name?" The good folks at @namedropio can help. Here's mine: namedrop.io/sandradivnick

Grading is communication.
When we average grades over time, valuing early attempts evenly with later attempts, we communicate that where you start will control how successful you can be later.
I can't think of a worse message for education to give to students.

Maybe if I just put on a tie & a blazer to teach all my students would put their phones away out of sheer respect for the institution

Instead of admin doing walkthroughs, they could do "tag outs."
They take over your class so that you can walkthrough another teacher's class.
Admin learns about your class, how they learn, classroom behavior & relationships.
Teachers learn new ideas for lessons & management.
All of this, with an emphasis on sleep eat play - because a regulated human is much more likely to be a functional, successful, kind human!
If a parent asks how they can help their child succeed in school, please start with the BASICS:

My first year, the AP came in and yelled at my whole class (in front of me), telling them that the USA might be democratic, but I was dictator in my class and they needed to shape up and show me my "due" respect. I prefer your AP's approach.

Crossing guard = music teacher (at least, in my case). I sent this home on @Seesaw after multiple parents were surprised to learn that I was the music teacher - they thought I was just the crossing guard volunteer. Nope! I rush outside after classes each day to smile and wave! โบ๏ธ
For a month now, I've been randomly singing bits and pieces of @RhiannonGiddens' Better Git Yer Learning. It's such a good song!
I blame @brandipacemusic and @CentralOrff ๐
What a treat! One of the kiddos asked me to invite the "boss of the school" to play with them. Here she was pretending to scare them while we sang a calavera ๐ song.
Principal Mrs. Riley came to play with some three year old friends during music class today.
Directora Sra. Riley vino a jugar con unos niรฑos de tres aรฑos hoy durante la clase de mรบsica.

This past weekend I bought a BEAUTIFUL heirloom tomato (golden yellow, huge, plump, nearly ripeโฆ) from @CentralMarket for $5, for our field trip this wk, and now I see that it is molding already.
I'm so sad. I was looking fwd to that sandwich.
1. I agree, 100%
2. I'm truly amused, because I spend so much time/energy teaching kids to #audiate (that is, to think INSIDE their heads rather than to say everything aloud).

Teach your kids to think "out loud"
One of the hardest things I had to do getting my PhD was oral exams - random questions, answered out loud
It's as terrifying as it sounds but something magical happened along the way
I became a better thinker
I practiced hours & hours thinking "out loud"
It's quite different from thinking as you work through a problem in your head
You have to explain not just what you are thinking but WHY you are thinking it
Keep in mind most of the time, you have NO IDEA what the answer is
The goal of oral exams IS to see how a student thinks
Often, you might find yourself in the wrong place, have to say out loud "hmmm, this doesn't make sense" explain WHY it doesn't make sense & try again
I've started employing this technique with my kids when they get something wrong
I say "explain to me how you got this answer"
At first, they couldn't do this - indicating that they weren't really THINKING critically about the problems
But now, they explain why they did what they did & most of the time CATCH their own mistakes in their logic
After all, what is the goal of education, if it's not to teach kids how to think for THEMSELVESโฅ๏ธ

Giving my classroom gluesticks human names has been revolutionary. Does a student care if a glue stick goes missing? No! Do they care if DEREK the glue stick has not been returned? ABSOLUTELY. Itโs like a manhunt until Derek has been returned to his rightful spot.
Kid 2 was right though - success is so much more easily attained when one is having fun... #gamefication

I was sent to support some brand new kiddos during my open period today, and at "work time," they arrested and jailed me on charges of (allegedly) stealing candy from a baby. I'm innocent, I swear! #PreK #learnthroughplay #PreKTeacher #BlockArea
Thanks for the teacher car wash, @washtub ! ๐ My car hasn't been so nicely treated in ages!
Today I sat down and did my annual @Seesaw refresher course - lots of great new things coming our way!!

Listen, @Seesaw, I shouted these words when I read what's coming soon. There are tons of great things coming, but this one deserved its own animation! #SeesawAmbassador #SeesawCertifiedEducator #InfiniteClone #CreativeTools (Okay, now back to my refresh course...)
