I rage-quit my academic pediatrician job in 2017 with lots of debt and no plan. Doctors don’t have to stay in jobs they hate. We can be successful everywhere.
I was featured in @Forbes for teaching doctors how to find new jobs and live good lives.

Don’t wait until your ā€œjust okā€ job becomes truly unbearable. Always better to resign calmly than in rage and chaos.

If you have not run your physician employment contract through an AI engine, why not? A 2 minute review could answer lots of questions about what you could do next with your career.

Naomi Lawrence-Reid's career looks different than originally expected, but she wouldn't have it any other way. As founder of @docdifferently, she teaches physicians how to build a flexible and fulfilling career outside of full-time clinical medicine. vist.ly/5ku7b

ā€œI can’t leave academics because I want to keep teachingā€ After 7 years of teaching residents at locums, writing board questions for qbanks, I now teach the pediatrics block to PA students. Teaching continues beyond academia!

I only earn more because I negotiated to earn more. If a hospital tells me they don’t negotiate, I don’t accept the job. You’re worth what you’ll work for.

I left full-time academics 8 years ago, but found ways to keep teaching: - I teach residents at locums sites - I am part-time faculty teaching the pediatrics block to PA students - I am a test question writer for Qbanks and board review courses.

The biggest negotiation mistake I see doctors make is cutting off contact with a facility or recruiter after a lowball offer. 3 ways to respond instead: āž”ļø

@DocDifferently this is why I do locums. Is it hard to be away from my family… Absolutely. But when I’m with my family, I’m 100% present.
Some of the happiest doctors I know are moms who do locums. They pick up 5-6 day assignments, negotiate sky-high rates, lock in at work, then come home and are fully present for their families for the rest of the month. They love it.

Doctors don’t need a ā€œgood reasonā€ to leave a job. Not wanting to work there anymore is enough.

Residency teaches how to be a good doctor, but not how to navigate a physician career. You can still learn how.

I work clinically through locums about 8 weeks in a year. The rest of the time, I’m a medical writer, consultant, expert witness, medical director, VA disability examiner, and aesthetic injector. The flexibility and earning potential can’t be beat.
