Two of the most important biomedical breakthroughs came from science of the Gila lizard venom (GLP-1s) and yogurt (CRISPR genome editing).
"The system that turned that lizard into a medicine is now being dismantled."
"Less support for scientists means strange questions no one will get to chase."

🚨 The @AfricaCDC statement on the new #Ebola outbreak in #DRC is deeply concerning.
🔬 This is a non-Zaire ebolavirus outbreak
🧪 13 of 20 samples tested positive
⚠️ 246 suspected cases reported
🕊️ 65 deaths, including 4 laboratory workers
This highlights the urgent need for enhanced surveillance, rapid diagnostics, infection prevention and control, and protection of frontline healthcare and laboratory personnel.
Thrilled to share the first major preprint from the lab. Viruses are classically viewed as targets of host sensing. Do viruses also sense and respond to the host? We propose viruses may act as “biosensors” of the host signaling state. A thread👇🏾

In sum, our findings suggest the possibility that viruses evolved as biosensors of the host signaling state, unveiling new antiviral opportunities aimed at disrupting virus decision-making.
Big shout out to co-first authors @kareem_alb and Declan Winters! Also to our stellar collaborators, couldn’t do it without you. Collaboration makes the dream work!
Happy Holidays from the Bouhaddou Lab @MicrobioUcla @UCLAQCBio @UCLA. It’s been a productive year and the group is growing. Feel lucky to get to do science with good people.
