On 21 October the government approved gas production at the Jackdaw field.
As health professionals, we regard this as a matter of patient safety. Jackdaw is a health decision, not only an energy decision.

The government’s next decisions will show whether lawful routes still work.
Health Impact Assessment linked to Environmental Impact Assessments are reasonable tests, and they can be met. We urge the government to meet them.

There’s a safer route.
The Climate Change Committee’s “highest-priority recommendation” is to remove policy costs from electricity, charged at 20 times the rate of gas.
That would save a typical heat pump household about £490 a year.

Jackdaw’s owner says it will “not materially influence” climate change.
We disagree. Climate health harms are cumulative, and every major source of emissions adds to them.
Our concern is the direction of travel.

In patient safety, removing a hazard is always preferred to managing its effects.
Cheaper electricity, warmer homes and moving households off gas all reduce exposure to the hazard.
Approving more gas production does not.

The GMC expects doctors to raise concerns when patients are at risk from “policies or systems”.
Does that duty stop at the hospital door, or a GP surgery?
When patients may face serious harm, our ethical and professional duties are engaged.

• Publish a health impact assessment for Jackdaw and Rosebank
• Remove policy costs from electricity bills now
• Fund a move off gas cookers and heating, prioritising children with asthma and the most deprived areas
