Honestly, this "controversy" is unnecessary.

One interesting and kind of heartwarming surprise in becoming a manager again is that I’m leading folks who are at the same stage of their PM journey as my own 10 years ago. One of the tension I’m experiencing is the desire to help them avoid all of the PM pitfalls I experienced

vs knowing that those pitfalls are the same reason I can even lead them effectively

Sometimes you have to feel the pain in order for the lesson to stick. Sometimes you don’t.

Agentic commerce has to solve for the “how does the agent use and earn my rewards points” problem if proponents truly want it to grow in adoption and repeat use

As someone building a product similar to Notion in a different space (labor and economic data), I often use Notion as an example of AI making a powerful, but often complicated product more legible to users.
Sometimes things just click.

Many companies are miracles, because they survive and even thrive while mired in poor or nonexistent communication between internal teams. Improvements made on this issue are coordination costs born implicitly by individuals or explicitly in the creation of a function (eg. PM).

This is ultimately why “AI company brains” solutions really on work for tech companies. Even then it’s only viable for a limited number of those companies specifically because they were previously conscientious about such things pre-AI (eg. Heavy doc writing cultures like Stripe)

Right now is a good time for companies building personal AI assistants to hire some people who actually know, understand and can talk to regular people.

The best approach is start with their user’s outcome (eg. what they must do to stay employed, generate revenue) and work backwards from there
"company brain" startups that construct information from internal messages and documents when they realize 90% of information only exist in peoples heads: 😭😭😵‍💫😵‍💫

I actually became a better product manager once I started leading product and design teams

Another takeaway after three years of building a company is that the returns to just "being a good person", and not acting transactionally, are higher than I expected. There are so many transactional, boring, and at times immoral people in the tech industry that if you act with sustained warmth, authenticity, humor, and integrity, great gifts will be laid before you. White pill.

I personally think the view that you have to be cutthroat and transactional to be successful is promoted to make it easier for those who are cutthroat and transactional to act with impunity.

I keep saying SMB through Enterprise AI adoption is downstream of consumer AI adoption and most consumers don’t know what’s possible with today’s AI products. And SMBs are closer to consumers than they are to midmarket and enterprise businesses.
SMBs are so far from adopting AI. I thought the explosion of consumer agent calls and texts would pull SMBs into adoption over the next few years. But many don't even have basic online booking. (I'm attempting to pay someone to train our dog)

I’m flying to Vegas for a conference and have 30-40 mins to spare. AMA about product management, agents, dev tools, why having a “presence” is overrated in early career, why “taste” is for your peers not your customers

Most underrated communication skill: taking 30 secs to structure your thoughts before you speak. Related skill: writing outlines for everything you write. Even that email.
