It’s hard to escape the perception that Trump’s presidency is more about him than any benefit accruing to America as result of his tenure in the White House. As Bill Barr observed, a presidency that’s about reparative psychological therapy should not be the object of a politics

1/A very accessible and useful interview of Thomas Nagel bringing together his approach to Mind-Body dilemmas, and his skepticism of materialist explanations, among other things. At the end, a sophisticated and skeptical view of AI consciousness @jennfrey @itaisher

In the end, it seems that Donald Trump, a president devoted to corruption and international betrayal, will be rated along with Jefferson Davis as one of the most ignoble politicians in American history

Thing is, a core requirement in the humanities does not have to be ‘cast in stone,’ so to say. It can be set up to reveal a discourse that e.g. emerged in Ancient Greece, and investigates vital questions that still prevail today @jennfrey

1/My college, in the early ‘70s, required two semesters of ‘Philosophy, Religion, and Drama,’ for Freshmen. We read Plato, Kant, and Kierkegaard, but we also read Martin Buber and A.J. Ayer. As well, we read ‘Walden Two’ by B.F. Skinner, and ‘Deschooling Society’ by Ivan Illich

Some in Congress criticizing Trump's policy toward Ukraine. Fine but not nearly enough. Time to pass legislation by veto-proof margin providing eco & military aid to Ukraine and imposing sanctions on Russia. This Potus has shown he cannot be trusted with US foreign policy here.

Will @nytimesmusic ever be reviewing this season’s revival of Così fan tutte? An account and critique of this year’s cast, and production, would be welcome

PS I’ve met Putin many times and listened in on calls with him as well. I also speak Russian. Yes he is soft spoken, deliberate, and measured. So what? He’s still a killer. He still launched a barbaric invasion of Ukraine, that has produced tragic loss of life not seen on this scale in Europe since WWII.

Well just in the way they are said to be in the gospels. Literally though symbolically. And note that the literal but symbolical has to apply here also to the flesh of Christ.

This woman talks as though she were a silly kid in junior high who knows little of the world. Cannot the viewers of Fox see this? Why would viewers fall for this nonsense?

“Cognitive surrender” is a very useful term. It points to existential peril in our time. The handwritten blue-book exams of my time should be revived, not to mention cursive writing

It’s becoming more and more clear that when Trump invokes “national security” about e.g. his pet building projects, the press, and even voting, he’s actually referring to his insecure, fragile ego
