BREAKING: Lula wins Brazil’s runoff, securing a fourth term. This is more than politics,it’s a lifeline for the Amazon. Under Lula, Amazon deforestation has fallen to its lowest level since satellite records began in 1988 (down 71% from the 2022 peak). The world’s largest rainforest stays better protected. #Amazon #ClimateAction

What an extraordinary night for democracy! In Brazil, Lula has defeated the far right in a dramatic electoral comeback. In Serbia, a student-led movement has toppled Vučić’s authoritarian government after nearly two years of protests. Two countries, thousands of miles apart, have delivered enormous blows to the nationalist right. A powerful reminder of what ordinary people can achieve when they organise and refuse to give up. Next up, it’s America’s turn.

Terri White, "The reality is, we have seen negative consequences (from Brexit)" "(Rejoiing the EU) will give us flexibility in terms of trade, skills" "And this is how young people, especially young working class people, used to experience the world" My view: Brexit wasn't simply about leaving a political institution. It fundamentally changed the opportunities available to British people, particularly younger generations who had no say in the original referendum but will live with its consequences for decades. Freedom of movement wasn't just about immigration. It was about opportunity, ambition, education, cultural exchange and social mobility. For young working-class Britons, the ability to move to another European country, find employment, learn a language, develop new skills and experience a different culture without navigating expensive visa systems was an extraordinary freedom. And that freedom mattered most to those who couldn't afford complicated immigration processes or the financial advantages enjoyed by wealthier families. We should also remember that freedom of movement worked in both directions. British businesses could recruit from a much larger pool of talent, while British workers could pursue opportunities across an entire continent. The Brexit debate has focused overwhelmingly on borders and immigration, while paying far too little attention to the freedoms British citizens themselves surrendered. The question now is whether Britain is prepared to have an honest conversation about restoring those opportunities, particularly for a generation whose horizons should be expanding rather than contracting.

Exclusive: The chancellor will use his budget this week to protect pensioners and those saving for their retirement as he announces plans to shield nearly one million people from paying income tax John Healey is expected to confirm on Wednesday that the full state pension will rise by £489 to £13,036 - equivalent to 3.9% However, the rise will push about one million people on low incomes who rely on the state pension above the £12,570 personal allowance threshold, meaning they would be dragged into paying income tax To retain the principle that the state pension is not taxable, Healey is expected to announce a rise in the tax-free allowance for low-income pensioners to £13,036. The move will cost taxpayers £200m a year by 2030 It will rise in line with increases in the state pension over the course of this parliament. However, millions of pensioners with higher incomes - such as those who have private pensions - will still pay income tax The Times has also been told that the chancellor has decided not to reduce the tax-free pension lump sum. Pension savers can take 25 per cent of their pension tax-free from the age of 55 up to a maximum of £268,275 There were suggestions that Healey could reduce the tax-free amount to £100,000, but he has chosen to retain the current level The moves to protect pensioners and those saving for their retirement come after Andy Burnham announced plans to end the pensions triple lock - under which the state pension rises in line with inflation, wages or 2.5 per cent - in 2030 to help fund social care thetimes.com/article/47291ec…

We should also use the upcoming summit to get closer to Europe by rejoining programmes like the #EuropeanSolidarityCorps -it offers fully-funded opportunities for 18-30s to volunteer in EU that could help make #youthmobility accessible to more young people:petition.parliament.uk/petit…

Burnham just has to raise Freedom of Movement and the massive lies of the Leave campaign start again. Any minute now Penny Mordaunt will pop up to claim that the whole population of Turkey will arrive in the UK if FOM is reinstated. They lied in 2016, don't be conned again.

Some are claiming that freedom of movement with the EU would mean hundreds of millions of Europeans wanting to come to Britain. They didn’t do that before 2016. The scale of the claim is absurd. And more importantly, free movement never meant anyone could simply move here indefinitely without meeting any conditions. After three months, people who weren’t working, studying or genuinely seeking work could lose their right to reside if they also lacked sufficient resources and health insurance. David Cameron’s government chose not to enforce those rules. Blaming free movement for that choice doesn’t make the scare stories true.

Ten years on, we have the worst of both worlds on immigration and asylum. Without freedom of movement, businesses face red tape while losing skilled workers. Restoring it cuts business costs, creates quality jobs for Young people, and helps us tackle the crisis together.

I'm so excited to have been re-selected to stand for Parliament representing Harpenden, Berkhamsted, Tring, Redbourn, Wheathampstead, Flamstead, Markyate, Wheathampstead and our wonderful villages and communities. It's been the biggest privilege of my life to be the MP for this new constituency. Since being elected, we've helped constituents with almost 25,000 personal and political issues, sent over 76,000 emails and letters to and on behalf of constituents, and I've participated in over 1,200 debates, questions, and speeches in the House of Commons. I've been nominated as one of the top 20 most active MPs in Parliament for two years and, most importantly, worked with fantastic people in the community, making a difference every day. Thank you to all of you and what you do for our area. From national issues to local challenges, I will keep fighting together, and raising your issues week in, week out.

Daisy Cooper, "We need to get Britain growing again, and the single biggest lever to grow our economy, is to get a better deal with t he European Union" "Join the EU Single Market, join the Customs Union, get a better defence pack - and that includes Freedom of Movement" "If we can do that, we can be safer, stronger, and more prosperous" "Ten years on from Brexit, whether it's immigration or asylum, we now have the worst of both worlds" "Under Freedom of Movement it worked both ways, its a reciprocal agreement" "If there aren't any jobs here in the UK you're not going to get a lot of people coming over here for jobs that don't exist" "It will reduce the cost of doing business, it will tear down the red tape and the paperwork, more businesses will come here, business here can create new jobs" Very well said @libdemdaisy 👏 My view: Daisy Cooper makes an important economic argument that deserves serious consideration. For a decade, Brexit was sold as a way to reduce bureaucracy, strengthen British businesses and create greater prosperity. Yet businesses now face additional paperwork, customs requirements and barriers when trading with our nearest and largest trading partner. The OBR estimates that Brexit will leave UK productivity 4% lower in the long run, with imports and exports 15% below what they would otherwise have been. And Freedom of Movement was never simply about Europeans coming to Britain. It gave British citizens reciprocal rights to live, work, study and build their futures across Europe. Those opportunities mattered enormously, particularly to younger generations. Cooper is also right to connect trade with investment and employment. Reducing barriers can make Britain more attractive to businesses, support expansion and create opportunities for workers. Of course, Single Market participation involves obligations as well as benefits, including accepting common rules. But that raises an even bigger question: why settle for following European rules without having a vote in shaping them? Full EU membership would restore Britain's representation in European decision-making alongside the economic advantages of deeper integration. The debate should now be about the practical costs, benefits and choices involved in rebuilding that relationship, rather than repeating the promises made in 2016. #RejoinEU

The only thing stopping the PM having an honest discussion is Labour’s EU red lines. Removing them will get our economy growing and give us the chance to join the EU Migration and Asylum Pact. That’s how we create a controlled, fair and safe asylum system.
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham says an "honest discussion" is needed on Britain readopting EU free movement "Freedom of movement had very significant challenges associated with it... but it was a type of immigration that perhaps wasn’t as difficult [as now]"
