The proposed UP-NS mega-merger would reshape American freight rail for the worse. Greater consolidation would devastate the businesses, workers, consumers, and communities that depend on a reliable freight rail system. As the STB evaluates the “merits” of this deal, it must fully consider the risk of higher costs and reduced competition on the American supply chain.

This morning, ACD's @EricR_ACD joined KRLD AM 1080 to discuss what’s at stake for Texas if the proposed Union Pacific–Norfolk Southern merger moves forward, including the potential consequences for the state’s economy, businesses, and freight rail competition.

U.S. refiners and petrochemical manufacturers depend on a competitive and reliable rail network to move the energy that powers our economy. But a pending merger between two of the last freight railroads would (A) concentrate market power, (B) reduce competition and (C) threaten higher transportation costs.
Alongside @AmChemistry, @ACD_chem, the Fertilizer Institute and the National Industrial Transportation League, we’ve filed a joint motion urging the Surface Transportation Board to deny the proposed rail merger application.

The proposed UP-NS mega merger would have significant consequences on American businesses and communities that rely on freight rail day in and day out. The STB must consider the numerous concerns about what’s at stake and stop this merger in its tracks.

Chemical distributors: your data exists. It just lives in 8+ systems that don't talk to each other. That gap has real costs, and a flat market is the moment to close it.

A merger that would control nearly half of America's freight rail market requires the highest level of scrutiny from the STB. Their evaluation must consider the harms this massive consolidation would have on workers, shippers, consumers, and communities.

Opposition to the UP-NS mega-merger is growing, with the mayor of Meridian, MS becoming the latest public official to retract their support. Consolidation often comes at a cost, paid for by workers, small businesses, and consumers.
The City of Meridian, Mississippi has formally withdrawn its letter of support for the @UnionPacific - @nscorp merger, telling the @STB_Newsroom the railroads "have not been able to show many of the major benefits" they promised. This comes after Ohio State Senator Thomas Patton, Chair of the Transportation Committee, withdrew his support for the merger, citing concerns over reduced competition and harm to rail-dependent communities. stoptherailmerger.com/icymi-…

With Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern submitting a new set of data detailing the expected outcome of their merger, the STB must closely scrutinize these submissions. This mega-merger would have significant consequences, including increased consolidation and prices to the detriment of shippers nationwide.

Labor unions, Attorneys General, farmers, and consumers are all voicing their concerns over the UP-NS mega-merger. The railroad’s flawed application overstates its benefits while ignoring serious concerns about service disruptions and higher prices for businesses and consumers. The STB must fully consider the harms of further freight rail consolidation.
