1/2 I am as certain as can be I saw my 1st 'blaze'* of firecrests yesterday! Gorgeous la'll flitty things! Confirmed by a young Farm Helper who was in awe of their song & marking. I heard nothing! A very knowledgeable ornithologist heard them in my company, I heard nothing. ..

* I came across the term, a 'blaze' of firecrests, from a @CampaignerKate blog, rather fitting. It certainly fitted the impact their gloriously lively fleeting & exciting presence had on the young man I was working with. And on myself, 2/3rd's into a soggy, chilly days work.🙂

1/2 A good day. I managed to get over to #otmoorreserve with both my grown sons, hoping to see a good murmuration. I grew up with them as a common sight. Starlings only partly played along, moving themselves off at a distance. Still a glorious thing to witness again. Bonus was ..

2/2 .. seeing my first marsh harriers. Then stopping in Aylesbury on our way home for a "what can we find" meal. Turned out to be a very pleasant little Sri Lankan restaurant. Yes, it's been a good day.🙂

We went on a jolly, up to London, with all the discombobulation that entails! Took a young man I work alongside and his P.A. to #WizardryInWood Amazing & inspirational turning, truly lovely & welcoming craftspeople & stewards. Thanks to @Turners_Company for a great day 🙂

Brace! Brace! Bra..... oh never mind, too late. (10 hours ago) I survived anyway, and thoroughly enjoyed it! We hosted a young woodturner day for 7 (2 of who we learnt of in last hours of prep) Brilliant day. Today's youth are great!* (*Ok, not all, but by far most.🙂)

Which is the healthy river? Both clips were taken yesterday. Both are rivers around Windermere, and both have septic tanks discharging into them. But one is used as a dumping ground for both treated and untreated sewage by United Utilities, while the other is primarily impacted by agriculture. savewindermere.com

They don’t understand at all The deal was that farmers would be paid to produce public goods - natural externalities at a market rate - the more they produced the more they’d get paid That deal was created because:
I think I understand what Daniel Zeichner means when he says farmers need to operate in a business-like way. But as @amcarmichaelMP says, the implication of his words for thousands of businesses across the country is that they are currently not doing so, which is more than a little insulting.

A pre breakfast amble to greet the day. A pause in the little bothy for a coffee, then along the field margins and railway bank listening to the blackbirds and glorious skylarks. The A413 traffic drone was unable to drown them out. #morningwalk #chilterns #fristyfrosty

Several of Wendy's @RoadFarmRamblin wonder goats heading off to their new home. They really are wonderfully curious and interactive beasts, perfect for their new setting.🙂 #carefarming #therapuetic #goats

A clear, measured , honest view on an evocative far reaching issue.
I wrote a thing. (And, for clarity, I don’t want any kind of revolt, I want to stay home and do my job) unherd.com/2024/11/a-farmers…

It has been the best of days, seized and lived. 🙂 Not so much by myself, I was very much on the sidelines. A Y.P. I work with got to grips with new tools & techniques & got over a dz blanks perfectly turned to fit the chucks. The keenness was humbling, & joyous. #lovemyjob 🙂

Turning a fresh batch of sycamore tagliatelle.😄 (A young man we support & work alongside. When he 1st came he was genuinely scared to use a sharp blade as "Can't, I'll hurt someone with it". The impact of lazy/frustrated words to a child who trusted Teachers. Now ..🙂 trust.)

1/2 It's been a busy & positive day. Alongside our regular Farm Helpers we had a local 'Transitions Team' volunteer for the day. One of them is the social worker for a young man I support who was here today. Seeing him in the workshop, on the lathes, busy, happy, relaxed ...

... confident & trusted was, it seems, quite a surprise & boost for her.🙂 Sincere thanks to @Turners_Company @Monteverdi1610 & many others in the Guild, Gary Rance & members of @AWGB1 whose support, in time, encouragement and financial support to equip us makes it possible.🙂

I really enjoy getting book recommendations from my children. Our son has come across a series in Australia he thinks will be of interest. I haven't found paper copies, which I prefer, but they are on Kobo. I think he's going to be proven correct, again. #happydad

Not all #woodturning is, or needs to be, beautifully elegant & finely finished. This very quick & rough piece was needed & perfectly fit for a purpose. It saved a lot of grief & time too! Rounding out several pole ends, allowing work on a goat shelter to continue.🙂
