There have been two crypto wars.

Ross Ulbricht was sentenced in 2015 to two life terms plus forty years.
He had built Silk Road, a marketplace that ran on Tor and Bitcoin, where anyone could buy and sell without permission. Most of what sold was drugs.
The judge said the sentence was meant to send a message.
In January 2025 he was pardoned. He walked out after eleven years.
Whatever you conclude about the market, the original sentence was the state's statement about what it thinks of unpermissioned exchange. The pardon is the argument moving. It has not finished moving.
