Europe has the technology to lead in 6G. Its bigger problem is creating a market that can finance the next generation of networks.
@FredrikErixon, @osguinea, Dyuti Pandya and @vanikashm5 argue that weak 5G deployment, fragmented markets, low operator investment and regulatory barriers are holding back the demand that European telecom technology needs to thrive.
That creates a risk for 6G: Europe can remain strong in technology and standards while losing ground in commercial deployment.

What does cloud sovereignty mean for Europe’s Single Market?
Our latest Occasional Paper by @MatBauerEcon, Andrea Dugo, @FredrikErixon, Dyuti Pandya and @lnasisto, examines 8,725 public cloud procurement contracts across nine EU Member States.
🇪🇺 97% went to domestic providers.
📊 New sovereignty framing: 100% domestic awards.
⚠️ Under new sovereignty framing, the sole bidder rate: 28% → 46%.
The analysis finds that sovereignty policies that use nationality as a proxy for control, can narrow competition and reinforce national markets without necessarily improving resilience.
The alternative is to focus on demonstrable security, resilience and operational control while keeping European cloud markets open.

Europe’s cloud sovereignty debate needs to look beyond data centres.
@MatBauerEcon estimates CADA’s 10-year cumulative economic exposure at €35.6bn under Narrow, €115bn under Medium and €233bn under Broad.
Under Medium, €79.1bn, around 69% of exposure, comes from migration, software rewriting and system redesign.
The challenge extends beyond building compliant cloud capacity to adapting the software and technology systems that depend on it.

Europe’s biopharmaceutical industry is moving beyond the traditional “blockbuster” model.
@osguinea, Andrea Dugo & @FredrikErixon analyse 225 EU biopharma firms and find that patents are associated with higher subsequent sales for small firm, but not large incumbents.
As innovation becomes more distributed, IP protection and growth-stage finance become critical to turning scientific assets into commercial growth.
