When you hear the word cartel, you don’t think of NC, right?
Why would you? NC is about 1300 miles from the border.
And yet over the last two and a half decades, cartel related crime has become an issue here.
It started around 2000 with an arrest in WNC. 15 were indicted for distributing meth linked to Mexican cartels.
Until 2008, the cartel related crime was relatively isolated. Then it skyrocketed.
Today, the CJNG and Sinaloa cartels are major suppliers behind the increase of meth, cocaine, fentanyl, and firearms in our state.
Think that’s no big deal? Drug overdose deaths in NC have increased more than 250% since 2008.
