True love is your wife bringing you two motel coffees because one isn’t enough. @racheljwelcher

Evan could write about fleas and he would make it funny, beautiful, and profound.
This time he’s writing about America and Christians’ complicated relationship with happiness, and it’s perfect.

My family and I were strolling downtown hunting for ice cream and some old gray longhair boomer at a sidewalk bar (is that a reality now?) says to me regarding my 4 year old girl,
“She’s gunna give you gray hair!”
Cackles.
I reply: “She’ll be a blessing all my days.”
Today is our 9th anniversary.
There was a time, a decade or so ago when it seemed as the grave had stolen any spectral of happiness.
It seemed to me that I needed to be a husband, and that I was one who needed to love and caretake, and to be loved would be gladness to my soul.
Now I still wonder around writing poems while dodging stacks of books, but there’s a wife, and the pidder padder of tiny feet, and so much more to dodge in a full and lively house.
Rachel made sure I didn’t die without issue, and she is the most brilliant mind to live with.
