There's been a fair amount of commentary in the past year on how social media has become less fun, less interesting, more easy to quit, etc.
And there's been a ton of commentary on how it's become more passive and "everything is TV".
But I haven't seen much on these things tie together, and I think they clearly do.
It's a lot easier to log off when your feed is filled with strangers
Algorithms and short-form video drove engagement. They also made it easier to quit. reason.com/2026/10/05/the-en…

My first brush with anonymity was in childhood, in a Catholic confessional. As I write in @BostonGlobe, I think we forget how important anonymity is in our daily lives. It's so routine that we don't even notice we use it.
But we'll miss it when it's gone. And that day is coming.

I hereby consent that if my mummified body is found 2000 years from now, you can display it anywhere you want. A museum or an Arby's, I don't care.
🚨 EXCLUSIVE: Glasgow's Kelvingrove Museum has removed Egyptian mummies from display because there was no 'informed consent from the deceased individual'👇

🚨NEW: The Online Safety Act has been a failure, according to a new report from Ofcom.
Ofcom have found "no significant change" in children encountering harmful content since the law came into effect last July. This is despite the signifigant threats to free speech and privacy.

The thing where one is obliged to pretend to believe this obviously false but politically convenient statistic in order to remain a liberal in good standing is one of those things that used to just kinda grate on me but after 25 years has driven me fully up the wall

Wait, I thought reading was over.
“Actually, in America, the reading of books is up. Sales of print books have increased nearly twenty-five per cent from a decade ago. The number of independent bookstores in the United States has climbed steeply since 2009, with a seventy-per-cent increase since 2020.”

"SCARY": A Watauga family sent WFAA the Nest Doorbell Cam video of a person wearing a Joe Biden mask and a Charlie Kirk t-shirt eating a banana on their doorbell cam.

It actually isn't. No one in the suit even alleges that they were "drugged" by Gaetz. They say he asked THEM to bring drugs or that they independently did drugs at parties. And these were women, not girls.
I used Airbnb a lot in its early years when it was all just, like, ppl renting out spare bedrooms or staying at their boyfriends' for the weekend so they could rent their own apt. for extra $$. It's amazing how the professionalization of Airbnb somehow made everything worse

It's hard to think of a service that's declined as much as Airbnb. To stay in someone's apartment, there's a good chance the bill will rival a Four Seasons resort and it probably comes with an extensive chore chart. There's almost zero reason not to stay in a hotel at this point.

I just got an email from Airbnb laying out new ground rules for what hosts can demand of guests, and THANK GOD.
At my last Airbnb, I had to strip the beds, wash every dish, clean the kitchen, haul the trash out to the road, and there was still a $100 cleaning fee!
If the relationship between Gaetz and the Jane Does, as described in this suit, counts as sex trafficking, then any form of sex work or any sugar relationship where the woman wasn't already independently wealthy would be sex trafficking! buff.ly/gXeQFtk
The new sex trafficking lawsuit against Matt Gaetz seems very weak. No allegations of assault, forced prostitution, fraud, threats, the victims being underage, or anything like that buff.ly/gXeQFtk

icymi last week: I've got a new @reason newsletter! It's part digest of Reason content, part new commentary, focused more on culture & pop culture than hard news. Might be fun? That's the idea at least. Please subscribe so they don't send me back to the short-form video mines!
