So @amazon are kindly sponsoring the @pressgazette #BritishJournalismAwards. They have a wind farm in Scotland. They also emitted 72 million tons of CO2 last year. Go figure 🙃 #greenwashing
Since we published our Guardian investigation, BP has spent another £50k on Facebook/Instagram ads like this which have been viewed millions of times in the UK 🤦🤦🤦 #greenwashing #climate #ClimateCrisis
THREAD: Our latest investigation by @thomaslewton for the @guardian found that BP spent £800k on social media ads as a windfall tax on energy companies was debated in the UK, and as oil & gas majors announced record profits. And they were not alone. 🧵1/6 theguardian.com/business/202…
Let's not forget other social platforms like Twitter and YouTube, which have no ad library at all. A similar BP ad campaign was spotted on @Twitter in recent weeks, yet we have no idea of its reach... 🤔🤔 6/6
BP’s UK ads this year mostly reached viewers aged 25-44 yrs old, but a more granular analysis isn't possible using Meta’s ad library. Microtargeting is a common tactic used when companies greenwash, but we need better ad transparency to know if BP & Shell are microtargeting. 5/6
Greenwashing is a common strategy among oil & gas majors to help them carry on with business as usual. Eco-Bot.Net also found dozens of greenwashing ads from Shell this year, many of which ran without a disclaimer that the content was social or political in nature 4/6
Energy policy expert @gregtrencher says that these ads are "misleading" and a form of "#greenwashing" as they present only a "minor portion" of BP's current energy production and investment activities. 3/6
This ad campaign, focussed on green energy and energy security in the UK, began 2 days after Labour proposed a windfall tax on North Sea oil and gas in January. It also escalated in the weeks before #RishiSunak announced an “energy profits levy” on 26 May 👀 2/6
P.s. Natural gas projects receive billions in subsidies from British Columbia govt, which says it views the pipeline as “a pathway to prosperity” for First Nations. According to @Yellowhead_ this makes govt support for First Nations “contingent upon support for pipeline deals.”
"The very fact that they're pushing [these ads] is like a drowning man getting caught in a swift river. A piece of straw goes by and he wants to grab it, hoping it'll save him,” said Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chief Na’Moks.
When #Biden stopped the Keystone XL pipeline last year, oil & gas companies took note. As well as British Columbia, many ads target Ontario - the site of solidarity protests, and the seat of Canada's government...
