The @EdWeekUnion voted overwhelmingly to ratify their first contract!

Congratulations to the EdWeek Union members!

Just last year, EdWeek spent nearly DOUBLE our requested salary increase on legal fees.
Their lawyer once chastised us for asking for this raise just so we could “buy horses.”
Our lowest paid employee makes less than $45,000. We don’t want horses. We NEED groceries.
EdWeek management has repeatedly said our salaries reflect our humble nonprofit status.
But CEOs at our closest nonprofit competitors earn $250-$300K, while ours annually takes home more than half a million dollars. Why does scarcity logic only apply to our lowest-paid workers?
A 3.5% annual raise for all members would cost EdWeek approx. $140,000. We know this isn’t chump change.
But the average senior leader’s salary is $300,776. The average EdWeek employee salary --including reporters, videographers, designers, and digital staffers--is $73,854.
The cost to live in the DMV is estimated at $100K+. We’re not asking for salaries anywhere near that. But a $65,000 salary floor would mean a substantialraise for 11 workers.
We think this is a worthy investment to retain diligent employees and recruit new talent.
EdWeek countered with a guarantee of 1.5%. Even with the possibility of discretionary merit raises, that still isn’t enough.
EdWeek first came back with a proposed 1% annual increase. Our members—who struggle to afford rent and groceries, who rely on subsidies and second jobs to make ends meet—resoundingly said this wasn’t good enough.
We want to keep the hardworking employees we have, some who have given this org 20+ years. We want to recruit new talent to keep Education Week evolving and thriving.
But it has to be feasible for them to work here. Right now, for many, those numbers don’t add up.
We have asked for a guaranteed annual cost-of-living increase of 3.5 percent,, and a $65,000 salary floor.
Let’s be clear: This is a fiscally responsible ask that doesn’t risk the future of our company. In fact: The future is precisely what we’re worried about.
For 17 months, salary commitments have been a key sticking point at the bargaining table.
Despite our team’s creative proposals to ensure members are paid fairly, we have received disappointing—and insulting—counteroffers from management. Our staff deserves more.
Hi! We’re the EdWeek Union - roughly 50 people who work tirelessly to make our nonprofit news organization a key destination for educators and the general public.
We wanted to share an update on our efforts to bargain with management for a fair contract. 🧵
Thanks to our bargaining team (and @WBNG32035 reps) for a solid first session! They are committed to bringing our members' voices to the table as they advocate to make EdWeek an even more equitable place to work.
Our first bargaining session is today! We are excited at the prospect of productive and collaborative conversations as we work to establish our first contract. 💙
