If a child starts behind in reading, the odds of catching up fall fast: β€’ 49% in kindergarten β€’ 29% in first grade β€’ 18% in second β€’ 5% in third We don’t have a third-grade reading crisis. We have an early learning problem. Great take, @ChadAldeman. chadaldeman.com/p/do-not-wai…

If babies understood embarrassment, most of them would never learn to walk or speak because of the amount of failure required to improve. This was one of our first lessons in life but somehow, we forgot

Unfortunate truth: The only way to become the curriculum leader in a typical district is to first become a principal, which usually means becoming an AP. But principal is a HARD JOB. My mom spent most of her career as a principal or AP, I watched it firsthand. The most instructionally-oriented teachers should be able to take a direct track to curriculum leadership. But often, that isn’t a Thing. Also, the district curriculum director can simply be a good principal who needed to move up the food chain to retire with a better pension, and β€œcurriculum director” was the first opening.
One issue is the teacher/admin divide. I wouldn't ever want to be a principal, but I think my skill set fits an assistant super for instruction. The only way to get to this position is going through the ranks. It has nothing to do with actually knowing anything about instruction.

Don’t be a difficult leader. Don’t be difficult to lead. Don’t be a difficult teammate. Be a leader people want to follow. Be someone people want to lead. Be someone people want to work with.
