JUST IN: Pope Leo XIV will not be attending the International Meeting for Peace in Assisi on October 27 on the advice of doctors. Statements from @HolySeePress: “Dr. Luigi Carbone and Prof. Stefano Margaritora issue the following statement regarding the Pope’s postoperative recovery: We wish to inform you that, as scheduled, the Holy Father underwent a follow-up chest X-ray. The examination confirmed that his postoperative recovery is proceeding very well. However, given the short time that has elapsed since the surgery, the attending physicians have deemed it appropriate, as a precautionary measure, to advise against the planned helicopter trip on October 27.” The Vatican added: “To facilitate his recovery following the thoracic surgery he underwent last Tuesday, and in accordance with his doctors’ advice, Pope Leo XIV will be unable to attend the event in Assisi on October 27, as planned, for the gathering titled “Unarmed and Disarming Peace,” marking the 40th anniversary of the World Day of Prayer for Peace, convened by St. John Paul II.  Pope Leo will send a message of solidarity to the organizers, leaders, and representatives of Christian denominations and other religions, as well as to the guests who will be in attendance, in the belief that the ‘spirit of Assisi,’ dialogue, and the search for words and gestures of peace are precious resources in an era of conflict.”

Pope Leo expressed his gratitude to the faithful and to God as he returned to the General Audience in St. Peter’s Square on Wednesday, just eight days after undergoing lung surgery. Addressing the pilgrims gathered at the Vatican, the Holy Father thanked everyone who had accompanied him with their prayers during his hospitalization. He also invited the faithful to renew their trust in God, saying: “Let us all renew our trust in the goodness and mercy of God.” Let us continue to pray for Pope Leo as he recovers and resumes his ministry.

JUST IN: Pope Leo XIV’s Doctors say “no further treatment is necessary.” @HolySeePress has just announced that Dr Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora have issued the following statement regarding the Pope’s postoperative recovery: “Today, the final histopathological findings and molecular biology analyses of the tissue removed during the surgical procedure performed on the Holy Father were reported. The results confirmed that the disease was a pulmonary adenocarcinoma and that it was localized. A subsequent oncological assessment confirmed that no further treatment is necessary.”

My book on the extraordinary and inspiring life of Mother Maria Stieren — a saintly Bavarian Benedictine missionary who against the odds founded her own flourishing traditional Congregation in one of the poorest regions of Tanzania — is published today by @SophiaPress:

From @HolySeePress: "Today, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV spoke by telephone with His Excellency Mr Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine. In the course of the conversation, the Holy Father recalled the grave situation in the city of Oleshky, in the Kherson region, and made reference to the request for a humanitarian ceasefire that he had presented to the President of the Russian Federation. His Holiness expressed the hope that cooperation between both parties will allow for the delivery of food and medical aid, and for the voluntary and safe evacuation of the civilian population. Finally, the Holy Father reaffirmed the commitment of the Holy See to promoting dialogue and peace." The call follows a telephone call between Pope Leo XIV and President Putin last week: xitter.cf/EdwardPentin/status/21…
Just in from @HolySeePress: “Today, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV spoke by telephone with His Excellency Mr Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation. During the conversation, the Holy Father expressed his deep concern about the grave humanitarian situation in the city of Oleshky, in the Kherson region, and called for a ceasefire to allow the delivery of food and medical assistance, and the voluntary and safe evacuation of the civilian population. Finally, the Holy Father reaffirmed the Holy See’s commitment to promoting dialogue and peace.” Oleshky, a Russian-occupied town across the Dnipro from Kherson, faces a humanitarian crisis after months of disrupted food and medicine supplies. Mined roads, drone attacks and restrictions on movement have left residents trapped, many without reliable water, electricity or medical care. Recent escapees describe severe hunger and untreated illness. Ukrainian drone deliveries are providing some aid, but safe evacuation remains extremely difficult as winter approaches. Pope Leo XIV and Vladimir Putin last spoke by telephone on 4 June 2025, less than a month after Leo’s election, during which Leo urged Russia to make a gesture towards peace in Ukraine; they also discussed humanitarian aid and prisoner exchanges.

I spoke with Pope Leo XIV @Pontifex and wished His Holiness a full and speedy recovery following his surgery. We are grateful that even during this difficult time for him personally, His Holiness remembers Ukraine and prays for our people. I briefed him in detail on the situation with Russian escalation and Russia’s constant strikes on Ukrainian cities and communities. We also discussed the humanitarian catastrophe in temporarily occupied Oleshky. We are working to help our people there. We are preparing decisions. His Holiness informed me about contacts with the Russian side on this matter. Of course, we also discussed all the current security challenges and threats, including the periodic lack of warnings from our partners about Russian ballistic missile attacks – something that has happened three times recently. I thank His Holiness for his support and all his efforts to achieve a dignified peace.

Evil detests beauty because beauty is proof of a transcendental order, of objective Goodness and Truth. To attack beauty is to wage war against the possibility of transcendence. Beauty is a great affront to nihilism. It testifies to that which is greater than the individual, because to create a beautiful thing is to acknowledge that you are answerable to standards higher than your own. Beauty is often called a great evangelist for this reason. This is why they outright destroy beauty or try to subvert your perception of it by promoting ugliness or triviality. Beauty is neither neutral nor trivial — your ability to discern the beautiful from the ugly is intimately connected to your capacity to recognize the divine. Dietrich von Hildebrand once declared that "beauty is the archenemy of mediocrity." Why? Beauty elevates a person toward truth, goodness, and the divine. The antitheses to beauty drag the soul down into nihilism and worship of the self.

Looked at from the point of view of scripture and Church history, what we are seeing is the natural punishment for apostasy. And that punishment will intensify until people stop deluding themselves that there is any solution, political or otherwise, short of a return to the faith

SAVE SHAFTESBURY’S HISTORIC CATHOLIC CHURCH The Church of the Holy Name and St Edward the Martyr in Shaftesbury in Dorset, England, is of considerable historical importance. Rooted in the sacred history of a town once home to one of England’s great pre-Norman abbeys, it has long served a resilient Catholic community. Today, the church needs essential repairs, and parishioners are raising funds to preserve this important place of worship for future generations.
