A person spends years climbing towards a position from which they might finally do something consequential, only to discover that the preservation of the position has become more important than the purpose for which it was sought. The institution that was supposed to provide a platform for action becomes an elaborate mechanism for ensuring inaction. Influence ceases to be a means of achieving something worthwhile and becomes a possession to be guarded. One begins by seeking authority in order to change the world and ends by allowing the world to determine what one is permitted to think.’
